  • Patent number: 5711981
Abstract: An apparatus for destroying pathogens on meat includes a dewatering station, a steam heating chamber, and a cooling chamber. The meat is treated as it is moved along by a conveyor. The dewatering chamber includes an air blower with nozzles for blowing air at the surface of the meat to remove surface water from the meat. The steam heating chamber is disposed adjacent the dewatering chamber and includes a steam heating chamber enclosure that is sealed for maintaining a positive pressure in the steam heating chamber relative to the dewatering chamber. In one embodiment the steam chamber moves along with the meat on the conveyor. The cooling chamber is disposed adjacent the steam chamber opposite from the dewatering station. The cooling chamber has nozzles for spraying chilled water onto the surface of the meat for rapidly cooling the meat after it is passed through the steam heating chamber. The meat conveyor extends through the dewatering chamber, the steam chamber, and the chilled water chamber.

  • Patent number: 5692238
Abstract: A garment having pockets or other enclosures capable of mounting cooling packs such as gel packs therein. Thermally sensitive indicators, such as sensitive color gauge strips, are used to display the packs current effective temperatures. Thermal garment openings allow the packs to transmit cold to a user while the thermal indicators inform the user if the packs are too cold or too warm to be effective. Many different types of garments may utilize the principles behind this invention including headbands, wristbands and body vests.

  • Patent number: 5675992
Abstract: A double layer sock that has a tubular inner ply having a foot portion and a leg portion merging substantially at the ankle of a wearer. A tubular outer ply surrounds the inner ply and has a foot and a leg portion merging substantially at the ankle of the wearer and aligned with the foot and leg portions of the inner ply. The plies are joined adjacent a top opening in the leg portion and arranged to receive a wearer's foot. A seam joins the plies and is located substantially adjacent the merging of the foot and leg portions to maintain proper alignment of the foot portions of the two plies. Methods of making a two ply sock are also disclosed. Preferably, the seam connecting the plies is knit such that the plies maintain proper alignment with one another.

  • Patent number: 5573823
Abstract: An improved pipe is produced from phenylene sulfide/biphenylene sulfide copolymers, The improved pipe has greater flexibility and ductility than pipe produced from normal PPS resin. Such pipe is produced by preparing a phenylene sulfide/biphenylene sulfide copolymer and forming the copolymer into essentially amorphous pipe by extrusion followed by rapid and uniform quench to avoid pipe crystallization, Also disclosed is a method wherein such amorphous pipe is oriented by subsequent die extrusion.

  • Patent number: 5418472
Abstract: An apparatus for activating a dual-mode logic device is provided. The apparatus monitors a parameter of an input signal of the logic device. If the parameter falls outside of predetermined parametric ranges, the apparatus activates the logic device. In the preferred embodiment, the apparatus resides on the same semiconductor chip as the logic device, and monitors the voltage level of the input signal. If the voltage level falls outside the voltage range which represents a logical HIGH and the voltage range which represents a logical LOW, the apparatus activates the logic device.

  • Patent number: 5264176
Abstract: An aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer is prepared from a dihaloaromatic ketone, alkali metal sulfide, water and a polar organic compound. The polymerization reaction mixture is subjected to a heat soak at an elevated temperature, then a separation agent is added under controlled conditions and the mixture is subsequently cooled to provide a mixture comprising particulate aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer. Biaxially-oriented film is made from the recovered particles of aromatic sulfide/ketone polymer by (1) washing the polymer particles with an aqueous calcium salt, (2) heating the washed particles to remove water, (3) molding the heated particles to form a sheet of polymer, (4) biaxially stretching the sheet above the glass transition temperature of the polymer to form a film, and (5) heat-setting the biaxially-oriented film under stretching tension for a time and at a temperature to increase strength properties and density.

  • Patent number: 5149209
Abstract: A hair dryer that includes a case having a handle and a barrel, and a fan positioned in the barrel and coupled to an electric motor for blowing hair through the barrel. An electrical resistance heating element is disposed in the barrel for generating heat to dry hair, and an electrical cord extends from the handle and terminates in a plug adapted to be removably received in a utility outlet for supplying power to the hair dryer. An operator switch is carried by the handle and connected in series with at least the electric motor across the power lines of the cord. An audible alarm is connected across the switch and in series with the motor across the power conductors of the plug and cord, such that placement of the switch in an open condition, with the plug inserted in a utility outlet, results in current flow through the alarm device and generation of an audible alarm signal.

  • Patent number: 5050503
Abstract: A system for aiming a selectively aimable warhead (SAW) at a target by exsively deforming the warhead into a shape desirable for directionality. Twenty-four explosive forming charges are located around the circumference of the warhead and run the entire length of the warhead. The proximity fuze selects one sector out of 24 as the direction aim. Having selected a sector in the azimuth, the forming charge in that sector plus the adjacent two forming charges are initiated simultaneously. After a time delay interval sufficient to allow the warhead to deform (about 1/2 millisecond to 1 millisecond), warhead boosters located furthest from the target (or 180 degrees from the forming charges) and on each end of the warhead, are initiated simultaneously. The warhead is detonated generating a high velocity fragment beam towards the target.
