  • Patent number: 5464078
Abstract: The hydraulic disc brake actuator for a trailer includes a first connector for securing the actuator to a towed vehicle; a second connector for securing the actuator to a towing vehicle; and a force multiplying parallel linkage apparatus connected between the first and second connectors for actuating a brake master cylinder. The master cylinder has a body portion and a plunger portion, the body portion being connected to one of the first or second connectors and the plunger portion being connected to the force multiplying apparatus such that the magnitude of force applied to the master cylinder is greater than the magnitude of force tending to move the first connector relative to the second connector. The parallel linkage supports and lifts the tongue weight of the trailer to dissipate energy, and to prevent binding between the connectors when they shift from a towing position to a braking position.

  • Patent number: 5411286
Abstract: In this improved trailer chassis, the accessories which typically added weight without adding to the structural capacity of the trailer have been replaced with accessories which are incorporated into the structural members. The frame of the trailer chassis is comprised of a front and rear beam connecting two longitudinal side beams that incorporate a recess to capture the trailer floor decking. The axle beam mounts between the two side beams to serve as lateral support to the side beams and as a flooring beam and incorporates a open section into its section through which an axle can be mounted. The fenders for the trailer are mounted so that they contribute to the structural integrity of the frame while serving as a side enclosure in addition to a wheel well.

  • Patent number: 5174550
Abstract: A screw jack incorporating a quick retract mechanism to permit movement of the jack into engagement with the ground such that only limited rotation of the screw is necessary for elevating the tongue of a trailer for disengaging a coupler on the trailer from a trailer hitch. The screw-type jack incorporates an improved handle which is rotatable about a horizontal axis between an active position for rotating the screw about a vehicle axis and a stowed position wherein the handle engages the body of the jack to prevent rotation of the screw. A support for the screw jack which incorporates improved versatility such that it can be interchangeably used on other jacks and can be used in applications involving uneven and/or non-level surface conditions.

  • Patent number: 4848735
Abstract: A tongue mounted rack and pinion jack for a trailer wherein a pair of die-cast gear box segments are bolted together for supporting a handle driven worm gear and a pinion gear in self-contained bearing surfaces formed in the gear box segments. When the gear box segments are secured together a gear box, a rack receiving passage and a leg receiving passage are formed therein. A common wall formed in the molded gear box segments separates the gear box from the rack receiving passage and has a window formed therein through which teeth on a pinion gear extend into the rack receiving passage and engage teeth on a rack extending longitudinally through the rack receiving passage and secured to a leg extending through the leg receiving passage.

  • Patent number: 4360217
Abstract: A coupling device for use on a towed vehicle, comprises: a body for receiving a ball of a ball-type hitch and a latch assembly for locking the ball in the front position of the body. The latch assembly may include a bracket connected to side portions of the body and a locking element supported by the bracket for movement between opened and closed positions. The locking element has a body with a bearing surface to engage the ball when in the locked position and a surface cooperating with a surface on the bracket. The cooperating surfaces are disposed at an angle relative to a line extending transversely to a lateral line bisecting the body. This angle is sufficient to permit lateral movement of the bearing surface away from the ball to disconnect the coupling device from the ball while being less than that angle which would cause the locking element to move toward the opened position when the ball re-engages the locking element in the negative loan condition.
