Publication number: 20200346496Abstract: A tread wear indicator for a tire is provided. The tire includes a pair of sidewalls and a tread and the tread includes a plurality of circumferential grooves and a plurality of lateral grooves. The tread wear indicator is formed in a selected one of the lateral grooves adjacent a selected one of the circumferential grooves. The indicator includes a plurality of step elements descending from a radially outward surface of the tread toward the base of the selected one of the lateral grooves. Each step element includes an axially-extending surface that is approximately parallel to and is radially inward of the radially outward surface of the selected one of the tread elements, and a radially-extending surface that extends approximately perpendicular to the axially-extending surface. The axially-extending surface of each step element is formed with indicia visible to a user of the tire.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 15, 2020Publication date: November 5, 2020Inventors: Michael Lynch Pulte, JR., Warren Lee Croyle, Paul Bryan Maxwell, Nicholas Thomas Schoeppner, Jesse Brian Serva

Publication number: 20200198409Abstract: A tire including a tread wear indicator is provided. The tire includes a pair of sidewalls extending to a tread, and the tread includes a plurality of angular circumferential grooves comprised of circumferential groove segments. The tread wear indicator is formed in a selected one of the circumferential groove segments and extends across the groove segment. The indicator includes a plurality of step elements descending from a radially outward surface of the tread toward the bottom of the groove segment. Each step element includes an axially-extending surface approximately parallel to and radially inward of the radially outward surface of the tread, and a radially-extending surface approximately perpendicular to the axially-extending surface. The axially-extending surface of each step element is formed with indicia that are visible before tire wear commences.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2018Publication date: June 25, 2020Inventors: Max Harold Dixon, John Kotanides, JR., Christine Ann Demagall, Jesse Brian Serva

Publication number: 20200198410Abstract: A tire including a tread wear indicator is provided. A first cutout is formed in a wall of a first selected tread element and faces a selected segment of a circumferential groove. A second cutout is formed in a wall of a second selected tread element and is opposite the first cutout. An indicator is formed in and extends across the selected circumferential groove segment and the first and second cutouts.

Patent number: 10252580Abstract: A tread wear indicator for a tire is provided. The tire includes a pair of sidewalls and a tread, and the tread includes a plurality of tread elements defined by circumferential grooves and lateral grooves. The tread wear indicator is formed in a selected one of the tread elements. The indicator includes a plurality of concentric step elements that descend radially inwardly from a radially outward surface of the selected one of the tread elements. Each step element includes an axially-extending surface that is approximately parallel to and is radially inward of the radially outward surface of the selected one of the tread elements, and a radially-extending surface that extends approximately perpendicular to the axially-extending surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2017Date of Patent: April 9, 2019Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Jesse Brian Serva
