Patent number: 7307668Abstract: A system, a method and an article of manufacture for uncentering an image of a video stream on a video display is provided. The image of the video stream is displayed uncentered on a video display at a position that depends on the aspect ratio of the video stream and the aspect ratio of the display used to view the video stream. Once uncentered, the image of the video stream is not shifted for the duration of the video session unless a user provides input to change the position. Various positions of the image of a video stream are available to accommodate user preferences or to prolong the life of the video display.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2004Date of Patent: December 11, 2007Assignee: Lenovo (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Jesse Lee Thrall, Daniel James Winarski

Patent number: 6819524Abstract: Provided is a storage device and method for interfacing with an external device. The storage device includes a portable housing, a storage medium enclosed within the housing, and two data interfaces at different locations on the housing, wherein both the data interfaces are capable of providing data communication with the external device. A controller is enclosed within the housing and implements logic to select one of the two data interfaces to use to transfer data between the storage medium and the external device.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2001Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Edward Kulakowski, Rodney Jerome Means, Jesse Lee Thrall, Daniel James Winarski

Patent number: 6731455Abstract: Provided is a library system apparatus including an array of storage cells and a plurality of storage devices. The storage devices include a storage medium and a data interface through which data on the storage medium is transferred. A gripper assembly includes extended members capable of engaging one storage device, movement electronics capable of moving the gripper assembly to the storage cells and engaging one storage device located within one storage cell, and a data interface. Data communication is enabled between the gripper assembly and storage device data interfaces when the gripper assembly is engaged with the storage device. Further, a library controller is in communication with the gripper assembly and executes logic to receive an input/output (I/O) request with respect to data in one target storage device in one storage cell and send commands to the gripper assembly to move to the storage cell including the target storage device and engage the target storage device in the storage cell.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2001Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Edward Kulakowski, Rodney Jerome Means, Jesse Lee Thrall, Daniel James Winarski

Patent number: 6038490Abstract: Disclosed are an automated data storage library and a method for operating the library. The library includes two pickers arranged on a common guideway; a plurality of media storage slots arranged in a plurality of regions alongside the guideway; a plurality of read/write stations arranged in regions alongside the guideway. Commands are received for jobs to move media amongst the storage slots and the read/write stations, and a controller queues the received commands and allocates the queued commands to the pickers and in an order of jobs which will allow the pickers to independently access and move the media so as to avoid interference in the same region, or in regions which are behind the other picker. The media storage slots may be arranged in row sets and regions alongside the guideway, each row set including one or more storage slots and each region including one or more columns, with the regions narrower than the pickers.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1998Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Kamal Emile Dimitri, Frank David Gallo, John Edward Kulakowski, Rodney Jerome Means, Jesse Lee Thrall, Daniel James Winarski

Patent number: RE36286Abstract: A method for selecting data storage media for demount in an automated storage library, and an automated storage library and program product therefor are disclosed. Preemptive demount of storage media is permitted when all peripheral storage devices in the library are occupied and one or more of such devices remains inactive for a predetermined time. Storage media may be demounted to service existing mount requests, provided the peripheral storage devices in which the media are mounted are inactive. There is also a need, however, to ensure the availability of an empty device to service future mount requests, particularly in libraries having only a single gripper mechanism. Thus, even when no mount requests are pending, the status of the peripheral storage devices is continually monitored.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1995Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: International Business MachinesInventors: Joseph Charles Hartung, Christopher John Monahan, Jesse Lee Thrall, Dennis Lee Willson, Daniel James Winarski
