  • Publication number: 20240011543
Abstract: A load control device including an asymmetrical rack-and-pinion system coupled to a gear set and to a load such that movement of the asymmetrical rack-and-pinion system causes movement of the load, and a biasing element coupled to the asymmetrical rack-and-pinion system. The rack is asymmetrical in that it is configured with a variable linear profile and the pinion is asymmetrical in that its pitch line varies as it rotates. The biasing element may be a coil spring. The asymmetrical rack-and-pinion system may be a single device or a paired set of a first asymmetrical rack-and-pinion device and a second asymmetrical rack-and-pinion device.

  • Patent number: 9909683
Abstract: A gearbox assembly for an actuator is provided. The gearbox assembly includes a rack, a spur pinion, a bevel pinion, and a bevel gear. Vertical translation of the rack causes rotation of the spur pinion and bevel pinion around a horizontal axis. The rotation of the bevel pinion causes rotation of the bevel gear around a vertical axis. The gearbox assembly may be coupled to a movable member of a valve so that actuation of the gearbox assembly moves the movable member. Systems including the gearbox assembly and methods of operation are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9890865
Abstract: A system including a flow control system, including a flow control mechanism configured to control a flow of fluid through a fluid passage, a rack and pinion system coupled to the flow control mechanism and configured to transfer motion from an actuator to the flow control mechanism, a biasing element coupled to the rack and pinion system, wherein the biasing element is configured to store potential energy as the flow control mechanism transitions from a closed position to an open position or an open position to a closed position, and a failsafe device configured to release the potential energy stored in the biasing element to open or close the flow control mechanism.

  • Patent number: 9222555
Abstract: A linear actuator is provided. In one embodiment, the actuator includes a motor, a gearbox, and a linear actuation device. The motor serves as a primary input to provide a rotational input to the gearbox, which generates a corresponding rotational output. The linear actuation device converts the rotational output of the gearbox into a linear motion for driving a load in a linear direction. The actuator includes an override system as a secondary input. The override system may be operated to drive the gearbox in the event that the motor becomes non-operational. Anti-back-driving devices may be provided to prevent back-driving of the motor and of the override system. In the context of a resource extraction system, the motor may be an electric motor powered by subsea electronic control system. Additional systems, devices, and methods are also disclosed.
