Patent number: 9304930Abstract: Technologies are described herein for temporarily writing data to a buffer zone on a recording medium of a storage device when the device is operating in a vibration condition. A vibration condition is detected in the storage device, and upon detecting the vibration condition, data of a current write operation is written to a buffer zone on a recording medium of the storage device, the buffer zone being configured with a lower areal density of storage than primary storage zones on the recording medium. At a later time, an idle condition may be detected in the device, and upon detecting the idle condition, it may be determined whether the vibration condition exists. If it is determined that the vibration condition no longer exists, the data is transferred from the buffer zone to the primary storage zones on the recording medium.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2014Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: JiaHong Shu, Xiang Lu, KianKeong Ooi, Qiang Bi

Publication number: 20080048595Abstract: A reverse torque, forward commutation motor driver system for a phased motor rapidly decelerates or “brakes” the motor by exciting, in sequence, a complementary excitation signal in each normal commutation state of the forward state machine, thereby providing an active braking effect. After active braking reduces the rotational velocity of the motor below a threshold, a dynamic braking technique can replace the active braking, wherein high-side drivers are set to an opposite voltage as compared to low-side drivers.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 22, 2006Publication date: February 28, 2008Inventors: JiaHong Shu, Tze Ming Jimmy Pang, Larry Robert Hedding, KianKeong Ooi, JuneChristian Ang, Kwee Teck Say, Danny Joe Kastler

Patent number: 7295395Abstract: A motion pattern of an actuator supporting a head is monitored during/after a disc spin-up. The monitor's signal is configured to generate a digital indication of where the head was just before the spin-up. The digital indication is optionally a single-bit indicator that is used directly as a decision of whether to continue a start-up operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2004Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: ChoonHoe Koh, HengChang Guo, WaiKhay Chan, JiaHong Shu, KianKeong Ooi, KianSoon Yeo, BengWee Quak, YuNang Zai, Kong Yaw Lucas Lee

Patent number: 7190542Abstract: A method, apparatus, and combination for reducing acoustical noise at start-up of a device is disclosed. The method includes the steps of determining an internal temperature of the device, and unlatching an actuator of the device based on the determined internal temperature of the device, by steps for unlatching the actuator of the device. The apparatus includes a thermistor providing a resistance value to a controller that selects an unlatch process based on the resistance value of the thermistor, and an unlatch procedure programmed into the controller executing the selected unlatch process. The device combination includes a base deck supporting an actuator confined by a magnetic latch for periods of inactivity, and unlatched from the magnetic latch for periods of activity by steps for unlatching the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2004Date of Patent: March 13, 2007Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: KianSoon Yeo, JiaHong Shu, JackMing Teng, KianKeong Ooi

Patent number: 6958880Abstract: A device for detecting an actuator assembly parking error when a disc drive is powered on includes a magnetic latch attached to the actuator assembly and a latch pin assembly electrically connected to a base plate in the disc drive, where the latch pin assembly is positioned to contact the magnetic latch only when the actuator's read/write head is positioned over a parking zone on the disc. A detection module is electrically connected to the magnetic latch and thus is able to detect whether or not the magnetic latch is contacting the latch pin assembly when the disc drive is powered on. A method for detecting an actuator assembly parking error includes powering on the disc drive, determining whether the magnetic latch has electrical contact with the latch pin assembly, and reporting a parking error if the magnetic latch does not have electrical contact with the latch pin assembly.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2003Date of Patent: October 25, 2005Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Lucas Lee, YuNang Zai, James Chang, JiaHong Shu, PeiKoh Lee
