Abstract: Laser-scribing brittle substrates along a curvilinear path is effected by impinging and moving at least two laser light beam spots along the substrate surface, the first spot preheating the substrate and the second smaller spot heating the substrate to the laser-scribing temperature below the softening temperature of the substrate. Embodiments include forming dual spots employing a crystal material or employing dual fiber optic cables each optically linked to a lens. In another embodiment, three spot lasers spots are formed employing a three-spot diffractive lens, the third spot formed behind the second laser-scribing spot and heating the surface to a temperature lower than the laser-scribing temperature. Embodiments further include laser-scribing substantially circular glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic substrates for magnetic recording media.

Abstract: A modified drinking straw having one end with ear-shaped extrados or expanded portion insertable into a modified straw hole on a beverage-containing package consisting of an outer paperboard carrier layer and an inner foil sealing layer to generate necessary air exchange passages between said straw and said sealing layer after inserting said straw into said beverage package, to avoid unexpected and undesired spewing or spraying of drink fluid from the straw by allowing air out when the package compressed under holding finger force. This invention also allows easier drinking due to less sucking effort with the help of the entry air pressure when sucking the beverage. The modification of the straw and the straw hole structure can be easily implemented using the current package manufacturing method and process.

Abstract: This specification discloses a module-type multi-function power outlet adapter for use of add-on electrical accessories in an automotive vehicle having a cigarette lighter socket. This device embodies a plurality of separate detachable modules which may be attached to a basic module insertable into the lighter socket and constructed to receive the additional modules, so to provide multiple electrical outputs. Such a module-type arrangement allows the adapter to fit the mounting space of cigarette light socket in various vehicles, boats, campers, and the like. A simple positioning pin structure ensures correct power leads connection and secures the combination between modules. The resulting solid structure allows easy reception for plug-in accessory equipment. In addition, this device acts as a power system protector by monitoring the voltage level and controlling the power use of those accessories no matter whether the engine is running or stopped.
