Abstract: A power sourcing equipment (PSE) chip, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) device and method are provided, which can determine a status that a peer end is connected to a powered device (PD) when four cable pairs are used to supply power. The PSE chip includes a channel controller, a first channel detector, and a second channel detector. The channel controller sends detection voltages along a first and a second groups of cable pairs in an Ethernet twisted pair; determines a first impedance and a second impedance according to the detection voltages and corresponding currents that are detected; and determines that a first group or a second group of cable pairs is connected to a valid PD according to the impedances and a preset range.

A controlling apparatus determines a power supply mode of the Ethernet power sourcing equipment, and determines high-power Ethernet powered device(s) and low-power Ethernet powered device(s) among the Ethernet powered devices. The controlling apparatus sets a power supply priority for each of the Ethernet powered devices. In one power supply mode, the power supply priority of a high-power Ethernet powered device is same as or lower than the lowest priority of the low-power Ethernet powered device(s). An Ethernet power sourcing equipment sets a power supply port to a sleep state, and sets a timer for the power supply port; enables the power supply port when the timer reaches a set time; and detects whether a powered device PD is connected to the power supply port, and if a PD is connected to the power supply port, triggers the power supply port to supply power to the PD; if no PD is connected to the power supply port, resets the power supply port to the sleep state, and sets the timer for the power supply port. Implementation of the present disclosure effectively reduces power consumption of the system and saves energy.
