    Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed herein that related to determining and using a codebook in a virtualized Active Antenna System (AAS). In some embodiments, a first radio node that is configured to communicate with a second radio node comprises a radio interface and processing circuitry configured to transform a first codebook that is in a non-virtualized antenna domain to a second codebook that is in a virtualized antenna domain based on a port to antenna mapping matrix used to transform a signal from the virtualized antenna domain to the non-virtualized antenna domain prior to transmission of the signal in a corresponding virtualized cell or sector. The processing circuitry is further configured to receive a transmit signal from the second radio node to thereby provide a received signal and perform Precoding Matrix Indication (PMI) estimation based on the received signal using the second codebook in the virtualized antenna domain.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for estimating Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) for Multi-User Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) based on channel orthogonality. In some embodiments, a method performed by a radio access node includes obtaining a SU-MIMO signal quality measurement for at least a first user and an additional user; obtaining an indication of orthogonality between a channel of the first user and a channel of the additional user; and estimating a MU-MIMO signal quality measurement for the first user as if the first user and the additional user are paired with each other for a potential MU-MIMO transmission based on the SU-MIMO signal quality measurements and the indication of orthogonality. In this way, a computational complexity for the SINR estimation of MU-MIMO users can be greatly reduced. This may enable a large number of user pairing alternatives to be evaluated in practical wireless systems to achieve improved MU-MIMO performance.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) rank reduction to improve downlink throughput are disclosed. A method of operation of a radio access node includes determining that an imbalance between parallel channels of a spatial multiplexing downlink transmission to a wireless device is greater than an imbalance threshold and/or that a Negative Acknowledgement (NACK) rate over time for the parallel channels of a spatial multiplexing downlink transmission reported by the wireless device is greater than a NACK rate threshold. The method also includes, in response to determining that the imbalance between the parallel channels is greater than the imbalance threshold and/or that the NACK rate is greater than the NACK rate threshold, performing a fast rank reduction for a next downlink transmission whereby a rank is reduced from a rank indicator reported by the wireless device to some lower rank. Reducing the rank may improve downlink throughput.

Data on the four logical antenna ports are re-mapped (S54) to the remaining three physical antennas by using the selected antenna mapping matrix, whereupon the data is transmitted (S55) from the remaining three physical antennas.

    Abstract: According to certain embodiments, methods and systems for toggling transmission parameters in a heterogeneous network to achieve a target block error rate by a network node may include obtaining a signal-to-noise ratio (SINR) estimate from channel quality information for a downlink between a network node and a wireless device. For each of a first code word and a second code word to be transmitted on the downlink, a block error rate estimate may be obtained based on the SINR estimate. The network node may then determine at least one expected SINR for the first code word and the second code word. The at least one expected SINR may be determined as a function of the SINR estimate and the block error rate estimate. Based on the at least one expected SINR for the first code word and the second code word, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for obtaining a target block error rate may be selected.

    Abstract: The transmission of stand-alone, aperiodic CSI reports from a UE in carrier aggregation in an LTE network is optimized. The coding rate is indirectly controlled by varying the number of RBs allocated for the CSI report transmission. Two sets of serving cells are established, and the payload of each set is approximated. For each allowable number of RBs and each payload size, a threshold SINR is determined and stored. An initial number of RBs is selected, based on the number of cells. The actual SINR is measured, and compared to the threshold SINR for the number of RBs and payload size. The number of RBs to be allocated is varied based on the comparison, by varying an index into an array of allowable numbers of RBs. Link adaptation is performed based on observed decoding errors, in an outer loop control algorithm that prevents wind up. An optimization for the particular case of one PCell and one SCell is also presented.
