  • Publication number: 20240286310
Abstract: A multi-layer panel for use as structural sheathing with a coating that is both fire resistant and water resistant. The multi-layer panel may be a wood structural panel, such as OSB or plywood. The coating provides building-code-compliant fire resistance characteristics. The coating also acts as a water resistant barrier (WRB) layer on a surface of the panel. The joint fire-resistant and water-resistant barrier (FR/WRB) coating may be applied to one or both faces of the panel at the manufacturing facility, prior to shipping or installation at a job site. The coating may also be applied to panel edges.

  • Publication number: 20240253266
Abstract: A method and system for removing material build-up, including, but not limited to, boric acid or boric acid-based material, on a press platen. A thermosetting resin is deposited on the upper surface of a manufactured wood chip or strand mat, which is then subjected to heat and pressure in a press. During pressing, the build-up material on the press platen(s) will soften and/or melt, and will adhere to the to thermosetting resin on the top of the mat. After pressing, as the formed panels are removed from the press, the boric acid build-up adhering to the thermosetting resin is pulled off the press platens and is removed with the formed panels. The panels with the buildup may then be processed for appropriate uses or dispositions.

  • Publication number: 20240190038
Abstract: An assembly with acoustic dampening properties for use in building or structure construction, a first panel, a second panel, and one or more connection elements therebetween. The first panel is a manufactured-wood acoustic panel with multiple lignocellulosic material-based layers, wherein one or more of the layers having a noise-reducing polymer integrally coating or permeating the lignocellulosic material. The noise-reducing polymer does not form a homogenous layer. The assembly can include insulation, gypsum board, or similar materials to form wall assemblies, roof assemblies, floor assemblies, and ceiling assemblies.

  • Publication number: 20230405867
Abstract: A method or process for a wood adhesive system comprising polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) in combination with a functionalized oil. The wood adhesive system may be used in the manufacturing of engineered wood products, such as oriented-strand board, which typically are produced by various primary, and sometimes secondary, pressing processes. This combination provides an adhesive with reduced usage of pMDI while maintaining adhesive performance. The functionalized oil may be a modified vegetable oil, including, but not limited to, a soy oil chemically modified to incorporate hydroxyl groups, or amine groups, to its molecular chains.

  • Publication number: 20230311446
Abstract: A manufactured wood panel or board with an integrated conveying laminate that conveys a fire resistant (FR) additive to specific locations within the panel or board during the manufacturing process, and the process and system for producing a panel or board with an FR conveying laminate. The laminate may be a natural or synthetic material with a closed (i.e., solid) or open (i.e., mesh-like) surface. In addition to providing resistance to fire spread and fire combustion, the laminate also may be selected from a group of materials that produce desired structural properties (i.e., minimize cracking, enhance structural integrity) both before and during a particular event, such as a fire event.

  • Publication number: 20230256648
Abstract: Methods of manufacturing a fire-retardant treated OSB to avoid press build-up issues with prior art fire retardants such as boric acid when subjected to normal heat and pressure used in forming an OSB panel. In one embodiment, the press temperature is reduced to below the melting point or softening temperature of the boric acid and/or prior art fire retardants, with a fast-cure adhesive system used in the mat to provide sufficient bonding and integrity while using a lower press temperature. Alternatively, a zinc borate or calcium borate dispersion, with melting points higher than normal press temperatures, is applied to the wood strands prior to pressing. The zinc borate and/or calcium borate are not melted or softened during the OSB manufacturing process, thereby avoiding the press build-up issues with boric acid.

  • Publication number: 20230219327
Abstract: A multi-layer fire-resistant (FR) panel or board, for use in exterior applications, such as siding, cladding, trim, fencing, or sheathing. The panel or board may be OSB or other form of engineered-wood, with an integrated fire-resistant laminate incorporated during a manufacturing process. The laminate may be placed on top of or under a fines layer. The laminate may be placed under an overlay layer, such as a resin-impregnated paper overlay, or other form of weather- or water-resistant barrier (WRB). The laminate itself may also serve as a WRB, and may thus be combined with or substituted for the overlay layer. A second FR laminate may be applied on the bottom of the panel or board. In addition to providing FR characteristics, the laminate also protects the structural integrity of the panel by preventing or reducing the splitting and/or cracking of the panel or board during a fire event.

  • Publication number: 20220372749
Abstract: A multi-layer fire-resistance treatment (FRT) panel for use as structural sheathing. The wood structural panel may be OSB or plywood, coated or treated during the manufacturing process with a product that provides fire resistance. The treatment may be integrated with the material forming the wood structural panel, or may be a coating layer applied to the mat or mat layer. A burn-through layer also may be applied. A protective layer comprising a resin-impregnated paper overlay may be applied on one or both sides of the panel.

  • Publication number: 20220105656
Abstract: A manufacturing process for manufacturing wood products with acoustic dampening properties. A noise-dampening polymer is introduced in-line in the manufacturing process to achieve higher acoustic performance. The polymer can be a viscoelastic polymer which is added during blending of the lignocellulosic strands prior to mat formation, or sprayed or otherwise coated on the lignocellulosic strands during mat formation, prior to formation of any boards or panels.

  • Publication number: 20220090374
Abstract: An integrated self-sealing joint sealing system that is incorporated into the factory edges of a sheathing panel prior to installation at a job site, eliminating the need to secondarily apply tapes or similar fluid-applied sealants, as the joints will become sealed when mated and installed next to adjacent sheathing panels. The system works with a variety of joint types, including, but not limited to, bead-and-cove joints, cove-and-cove, and cove-and-butt joints, with matching corresponding joint profiles along panel edges. A compressible sealant, adhesive or gasket material is applied to surfaces in one or both profiles at the factory during the manufacturing process. During field installation, the matching corresponding joint profiles are placed together so the sealant material is compressed, forming a complete watertight and airtight joint.

  • Publication number: 20190234079
Abstract: An improved wood or engineered wood substrate panel, with one edge of each panel forming a first joint element and the opposing edge forming a complementary second joint element, wherein the first joint element from one panel is configured to mate and form a joint with the second joint element on an adjacent panel. Each panel is provided with complementary sealants or adhesives pre-installed on each joint element, so that the first joint element is joined with the second joint element to form the joint, an adhesive bond is automatically formed by the sealants on contact, or shortly thereafter, and no adhesive need be applied during installation.

  • Publication number: 20190161978
Abstract: A system for constructing a deck using engineered wood products, including, but not limited to, structural composite lumber (SCL). Deck boards may be formed from a plurality of veneer layers treated with fire protection treatments, preservatives and/or other chemical treatments, which may be specific to a particular veneer layer, and assembled with adhesives binding the layers together in a stack, resulting in a deck board with unique properties in aggregate. The veneer layers directly adjacent to the two outer face layers may be positioned so that the direction of the wood grain is cross-directional to the direction of the wood grain in the surface layers. The boards are also subject to a multi-layer surface finishing treatment with aesthetic components and a protective component.
