  • Patent number: 11499471
Abstract: Systems and methods for reducing heat loss to a turbocharger during cold engine starting are described. In one example, a turbocharger bypass pipe and a turbocharger turbine pipe are oriented at forty five degrees relative to a longitudinal axis of a catalyst so that a turbocharger turbine may be completely bypassed, thereby increasing the amount of energy that may be transferred to the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 11073071
Abstract: A fuel delivery system and a direct injector for directly injecting fuel into a cylinder are provided. In one example, a direct fuel injector includes a nozzle in fluidic communication with a fuel source, the nozzle includes at least one fuel flow path that divides into two exit flow paths within the nozzle defining a plurality of exit orifices stemming from a common inlet orifice thereby improving the atomization and mixing of the fuel as it enters the cylinder. A plurality of spaced-apart divided fuel flow paths may be positioned within the nozzle to further optimize mixing and reduce wall and piston wetting.

  • Patent number: 7318406
Abstract: A piston in a direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine is configured to reciprocate upward and downward within a combustion chamber along a reciprocating axis. The piston comprises an upper end which partly defines the combustion chamber; a bowl defined on the upper end of the piston, the bowl having an at least partially curved sidewall region extending upward from a bottom surface of the bowl, the bowl being configured so that fuel injected laterally into the bowl toward the curved sidewall region from an injection side of the bowl is directed along the curved sidewall region and upward toward a spark plug of the internal combustion engine, where the bowl has a converging contour in which a curvature of the converging contour is greater at a portion of the contour near the spark plug than a portion of the contour near the injection side of the bowl.

  • Patent number: 7104250
Abstract: A system and method for controlling combustion in a direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine inject fuel directly into a combustion chamber through an injector having an ignition jet or group of jets positioned primarily to support stratified charge formation and a mixing jet or group of jets positioned primarily to support homogeneous charge formation. The ignition jet(s) and mixing jet(s) produce discernibly different yet well connected fuel clouds within the cylinder to provide stable combustion and reduce cylinder wall wetting by appropriate selection of the axial/longitudinal angles and radial/circumferential angles of the ignition and mixing jets.
