  • Patent number: 6291572
Abstract: Novel methods of making elastomer compositions irclude the use of certain modifying agents and mechanical working prior to incorporation of a vulcanization system in a first or other early stage of a multi-stage process particulate filler, such as carbon black, and sulfur cross-linking agent are substantially dispersed into sulfur crosslinkable hydrocarbon elastomer. The particulate filler and sulfur crosslinking agent can be pre-mixed together as a pre-blend prior to being added to the elastomer. A substantially unvulcanized, processable elastomer is produced by the multi-stage process, involving further mechanical working of the initial masterbatch. A curative additive comprising accelerator, and optionally additional sulfur crosslinking agent, can be added and dispersed in the elastomer to produce a vulcanizable composition.

  • Patent number: 6172154
Abstract: Novel elastomeric compositions are disclosed, incorporating silicon-treated carbon black and pre-vulcanization modifier selected from non-silane polysulfidic organo-compounds. The silicon-treated carbon black particulate filler differs chemically and in its performance characteristics from simple mixtures of silica and carbon black fillers. The pre-vulcanization modifier is effective to substantially increase bound rubber content in the product of a non-productive thermomechanical working of a base composition incorporating the silicon-treated carbon black particulate filler and SBR or other such unsaturated elastomer. The thermal working takes place at a maximum temperature sufficient to vulcanize the unsaturated elastomer if it were in the presence of a suitable vulcanization system.

The first and second feedstock comprise a carbon black-yielding feedstock, and at least one feedstock also comprises a silicon-containing compound. The reactor is operated at a sufficient temperature to decompose the silicon-containing compound and to pyrolize the carbon black-yielding feedstock. An additional method is disclosed which involves making an aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase using multi-stage reactor having at least the stages for introducing a feedstock, wherein at least one of the feedstocks comprises a carbon black-yielding feedstock and wherein at least one of the feedstock comprises a silicon-containing compound.

  • Patent number: 6051700
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and process for preparing a hydroxyalkyl starch. In accordance with the disclosed invention, the starch is treated with an enzyme under conditions to increase the susceptibility of the starch to hydroxyalkylation by a hydroxyalkylating agent. After the starch is so treated, the starch is hydroxyalkylated with a hydroxyalkylating agent. The hydroxyalkylation reaction can proceed to provide a starch having an MS greater than about 0.2, while still remaining in granular form in the aqueous suspension. The method of the invention thus provides a granular starch having a higher MS than is otherwise attainable via a reaction in aqueous media.
