  • Publication number: 20170142632
Abstract: Techniques described herein may be used to manage a wireless telecommunications network that is subject to carrier restrictions. In a handover procedure, a source base station may assign an alternative primary carrier to a user device if the current primary carrier (or a secondary carrier thereof) is prohibited by a target base station. An unpaired downlink carrier may be aggregated to the alternative primary carrier as a supplemental downlink (SDL) carrier. New primary carriers may be created by joining unpaired downlink carriers with unpaired uplink carriers. New primary carriers may include a high frequency downlink carrier and a low frequency uplink carrier. New primary carriers may be allocated to wireless devices within a coverage area based on device type and/or a signal propagation quality of each wireless device.

  • Patent number: 9609558
Abstract: User devices may search for cellular networks that provide the best available service, such as Long-Term Evolution (“LTE”) networks. If such a network is unavailable, the user device may connect to a different network, such as a Code Division Multiple Access 2000 1X network. When connected to the 1X network, the user device may not attempt to search for the LTE network unless the user device enters an idle mode, even if the LTE network becomes available while connected to the 1X network. Systems and/or methods, described herein, may “force” the user device into idle mode, while the user device is actively communicating via the 1X network, so that the user device may search for the LTE network. Forcing the user device into idle mode may include interrupting communications, which may include causing traffic, output by network applications of the user device, to not be transmitted from the user device.

  • Publication number: 20170041098
Abstract: Techniques described herein relate to reducing co-channel interference between macrocells and small cells in a heterogeneous network environment. Macrocells and small cells may dynamically select from among multiple interfaces (e.g., an X2 or S1 interface) to communicate FeICIC control communications. In one implementation, the selection may be based on the round trip delay (RTD) time between pairs of nodes. Thus, the macrocells and small cells nodes may dynamically select either the X1 or S1 interface based on whichever of these interfaces has the smallest RTD to the destination radio node.

  • Publication number: 20160381691
Abstract: Variable bitrate (“VBR”)-based applications may use physical layer metrics, associated with a radio access network (“RAN”), in order to select a data rate and/or codec at which to send and/or receive data. Such VBR-based applications may include voice call application, video streaming applications, or the like. An application programming interface (“API”) between the physical layer and the application layer of a user device may facilitate the analysis of the physical layer metrics of the RAN. The RAN may also, or alternatively, provide physical layer metrics to the user device (e.g., via control signaling). The RAN may enforce constraints on maximum or minimum data rates, and/or may specify codecs that should be used.

  • Patent number: 9473287
Abstract: According to a disclosed method, an MME in a network analyzes KPIs from the cells it serves and based on the KPIs, it decides to engage in sharing. The MME then contacts a sharing entity (SE) to announce that it wants to borrow or to supply resources. The MME obtains terms of a sharing agreement from the SE and the MME obtains the identity of the other network. In response to this information, the MME configures its network elements to share. The MME's own network may be a supplier or a borrower. If the network is a supplier, the MME configures its base stations to support UEs subscribing to the other network. If the network is a borrower, the MME configures its UEs to accept service from the other network's base stations. The SE applies knowledge of network topology and of services offered. This knowledge is obtained from a sharing database. At the expiration of the sharing agreement, the SE tells the MMEs to deactivate the sharing agreement.

  • Publication number: 20160227475
Abstract: When connected to an alternate network, a user device may search for a preferred network when the user device is actively transmitting traffic via the alternate network. As such, the user device may search for, and potentially locate, the preferred network faster than when the user device waits to search for the preferred network after becoming idle. While active, the user device may search for the preferred network for a relatively short duration, in order to limit the amount of time that data flow transmission is interrupted when searching for the preferred network. The user device may search for the preferred network based on a list of search parameters. The list of search parameters may be prioritized differently based on whether the user device is active or idle, and may be based on a quantity of times that the user device has searched for the preferred network.

  • Publication number: 20160192370
Abstract: A base station may establish a wireless connection with a mobile device. The base station may determine an index value for each of a plurality of carriers that may be used for the wireless connection. The index value for a respective carrier may be determined based on a quantity of idle mode devices using the respective carrier in an idle mode. The base station may generate a carrier order that indicates a priority for each of the plurality of frequencies. The carrier order may be generated based on sorting the plurality of carriers based on the index values for the plurality of carriers. The base station may send order information indicating the carrier order to the mobile device via the wireless connection.
