The biological adhesive moiety included in the composition can be a lectin such as griffithsin. The composition can further include an effective amount of an antiviral agent encapsulated by an electrospun fiber. Nanoparticles including a microbicide conjugated to the surface of the nanoparticle can also be included in the composition. Methods of treating a viral infection are also provided and include administering to a subject an effective amount of a composition comprising an electrospun fiber having a surface and a biological adhesive moiety conjugated to the surface of the electrospun fiber.
