    Abstract: An environmentally friendly process is provided for the preparation of poly(phenylene ether) resin by oxidatively coupling at least one monovalent phenol using an oxygen containing gas and a complex copper (I) amine catalyst as the oxidizing agent and extracting the copper catalyst with an aqueous containing solution as a copper (II)-organic acid salt, an improvement which comprises reduction and recovery of the copper (II) species as a copper (I) species for regeneration of the complex copper (I) amine catalyst.
