Patent number: 6073699Abstract: A new elevator for use in wellbore operations has been invented which, in certain aspects, has a first body part, a second body part, the body parts together defining a interior opening through the elevator for accommodating a wellbore tubular therein, first hinge apparatus hingedly connecting the two body parts together and permitting the two body parts to be hingedly openable on a first side of the elevator, and second hinge apparatus disposed across from the first hinge apparatus, the second hinge apparatus hingedly connecting the two body parts together and permitting the two body parts to be hingedly openable on a second side of the elevator. In certain aspects such an elevator has at least one roller secured to an interior of at least one of the body parts to facilitate movement of a wellbore tubular with respect to the elevator, and inparticular aspects has a plurality of spaced apart rollers. In one such elevator the plurality of rollers is one or more rollers on each body part.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1998Date of Patent: June 13, 2000Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventor: Jimmy L. Patent number: 5577566Abstract: A new tool has been developed for, in one aspect, facilitating release of a tubular string coupled between a travelling block and elevators with insufficient clearance to release elevator slips in order to remove the tubular. In one aspect the releasing tool is effectively shortened permitting release of the elevators. Such shortening is effected by releasing an expansion sub and piston within the tool for relative movement with respect to other parts of the tool. Initially the expansion sub and piston are held in place by fluid in a first chamber. Movement of fluid from the first chamber and movement of fluid into a second chamber housing the piston results in piston movement (and movement of the expansion sub which is secured to the piston) to effectively shorten the tool. In one aspect the fluid moves in a closed loop between the chambers and no fluid is expelled to the environment. In another aspect only one fluid chamber is used.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1995Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Weatherford U.S., Inc.Inventors: Stephen L. Albright, Michael W. Hayes, Jimmy L. Hollingsworth, Guy L. McClung, III
