  • Patent number: 7915374
Abstract: Processes for producing polyethylene terephthalate copolyesters are disclosed, that include the steps of: esterifying a mixture of at least terephthalic acid, from 20 mole percent to 45 mole percent 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and ethylene glycol, optionally in the presence of one or more alkaline earth metals or alkali metals, to form an oligomer; polycondensing the oligomer in the melt phase in the presence of aluminum and one or more alkaline earth metals or alkali metals, to obtain a copolyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.5 dL/g; and thereafter adding to the copolyester a phosphorus-containing compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 27, 2009
Date of Patent: March 29, 2011
    Assignee: Eastman Chemical Company
Inventors: Jason Christopher Jenkins, Gary Wayne Connell, Howard Smith Carman, Jr., Douglas Weldon Carico, Jr., Jimmy Ray Trotter, Alan Wayne White, Mary Therese Jernigan, Rodney Scott Armentrout

  • Patent number: 6171685
Abstract: Provided are water-dispersible sulfopolyester compositions having relatively large proportions of pigments and/or fillers. Such compositions are useful as packaging materials and are substantially non-blocking when processed using packaging rolls and are comprised of at least one sulfopolyester as described herein, about 10 to about 75 weight percent of a pigment and/or filler, and a wax.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5688899
Abstract: An improved clarity copolyester of a diethylene glycol modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) has a b* value of less than 15, preferably less than 10. The copolyester composition has an inherent viscosity of about 0.4 to 1.0 dL/g and comprises (A) 100 mol percent dicarboxylic acid residue component, (B) 100 mol percent diol residue component, (C) catalyst residues and (D) color control agent residues. The dicarboxylic acid residue component comprises at least 75 mol percent of terephthalic acid residues. The diol residue component comprises 10 to 50 mol percent diethylene glycol residue and 50 to 90 mol percent ethylene glycol residue. The catalyst residues comprise 20 to 100 ppm manganese, 50 to 300 ppm antimony, 0 to 100 ppm titanium and 40 to 150 ppm phosphorus, based on the weight of the copolyester.
