More particularly, this invention is directed to a method for preparing N-phosphonomethylglycine involving the reaction of AMPA, an alkali metal cyanide or hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde and hydrolyzing the product of that reaction to form N-phosphonomethylglycine and its salts.
