  • Patent number: 8035579
Abstract: A plasma display panel (PDP) driving method and a PDP gray-representing method for improving representation performance of low gray scales is disclosed. A voltage rising from a low level voltage to a reset voltage of a reset period of a subsequent subfield is applied to a scan electrode, without having a sustain period, after performing an address operation of the subfield with the minimum weight. The discharge cell selected in the address period of the minimum weight is discharged in an initial part of the gradually rising voltage.

  • Patent number: 7542015
Abstract: Disclosed is a driving device of a PDP having a misfiring erase period between reset and address periods. Large amounts of positive and negative charges are respectively formed on scan and sustain electrodes because of an unstable reset operation in the reset period. Because of the charges, discharging can occur between the scan and sustain electrodes in the sustain period even without addressing in the address period. In the misfiring erase period, a voltage is applied between the scan and sustain electrodes to generate discharging and respectively form negative and positive charges on the scan and sustain electrodes. An erase pulse is then applied to erase the negative and positive charges respectively formed on the scan and sustain electrodes.

  • Patent number: 7450089
Abstract: An improved plasma display panel and a method for driving the same are disclosed. Illustratively, the plasma display panel includes a plurality of address electrodes and a plurality of scan electrodes and sustain electrodes, and displays video data through dual scanning. A temperature sensor included in the plasma display panel detects a temperature of the plasma display panel. When the detected temperature is determined to be low, a scanning direction in which a voltage is applied to the scan electrodes is controlled such that the plasma panel is scanned from both ends to the center. When the detected temperature is determined to be high, a scanning direction in which a voltage is applied to the scan electrodes is controlled such that the plasma panel is scanned from a top towards the center. Altering the scan direction based on temperature improves picture quality.

  • Publication number: 20080174587
Abstract: In a plasma display device, a transistor is coupled between a power source that supplies a Ve voltage and a sustain electrode, and a capacitor is coupled between a power source that supplies a Ve voltage and a ground terminal. During a sustain period, a Vs voltage and 0V are alternately applied. Since the Vs voltage is set to be less than the Ve voltage, the capacitor is charged with the Vs voltage through a body diode of the transistor when the Vs voltage is applied to the sustain electrode during the sustain period. Therefore, the Vs voltage charged during a period ranging from after the sustain period to before the transistor is turned on, is discharged to be less than the Ve voltage. Accordingly, only one transistor needs to be used between the power source that supplies the Ve voltage and the sustain electrode.

  • Patent number: 7391390
Abstract: An improved plasma display panel (PDP) having decreased background brightness, decreased power consumption, and improved contrast includes an address electrode, and a scan electrode and a sustain electrode are arranged in pairs with the address electrode. The PDP driver includes a subfield data generator that generates subfield data from input image data. An address data driver is provided for applying to the address electrode a voltage that corresponds to the subfield data. An address data determiner included in the PDP driver detects a subfield which has no address data from among the subfield data, and outputs a control signal that controls a reset operation of the detected subfield. In response, a scan/sustain pulse driver applies to the scan electrode and the sustain electrode a voltage that corresponds to the control signal provided by the address data determiner.

  • Publication number: 20080143642
Abstract: A plasma display device and a driving apparatus thereof includes a main switch in order to prevent current from flowing to a power supply that supplies a higher voltage than a negative voltage while the negative voltage is applied to a scan electrode. The main switch is provided only in a current path formed for recovering an energy and applying a ground voltage during the sustain period. Thus, the current that passes through the main switch is reduced and the amount of generated heat is decreased. As a result, the reliability of the main switch can be improved. Further, because the main switch is not provided in a current path formed when the sustain voltage is applied during the sustain period or when the reset rising waveform is applied during the reset period, a distortion of the driving waveform can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7253825
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for driving an image display device, such as, a plasma display panel, to represent a gradation. The pixels of a panel are classified into a plurality of groups, and one frame period is divided with time into n subfields. An address period and a sustain period are sequentially executed on each of the groups during at least two of the n subfields. While the pixels of one group are undergoing an address period during a subfield, the pixels of the other groups remain idle. While the pixels of one group are undergoing a sustain period, the pixels of groups that have already been addressed also undergo the sustain period. During one subfield, different gradation weights are allocated to the groups. A gradation of visual brightness for each pixel is determined by performing an address period for either all or some of the groups during at least two subfields. The panel driving method for representing gradation is adaptable.

  • Patent number: 7173578
Abstract: A method and apparatus for driving a plasma display panel in which a reset discharge is selectively performed with regard to the distribution of wall charges in discharge cells are provided. The method includes applying a reset signal for preventing a reset discharge from occurring in cells having conditions under which an address discharge can occur during the address period and allowing a reset discharge occur in cells which do not have the above conditions. Accordingly, an unnecessary discharge can be suppressed, thereby making a dark portion darker. Therefore, contrast can be greatly improved, and a time for a reset period can be reduced.

  • Publication number: 20060203431
Abstract: A driving apparatus for a PDP may employ different connection schemes that may include different elements to stably charge capacitors respectively connected to each switching device with the externally applied voltage when the PDP is initially turned on. The capacitors associated with switching devices that have source terminals connected to a voltage source that supplies a ground voltage or lower may be stably charged directly via the externally applied voltage source. A ramping capacitor or a ramping resistor may be connected to the switching devices that have a drain terminal connected to a switching device that does not have a source terminal connected to a voltage source that supplies a ground voltage or lower to output a ramping signal to indirectly and stably charge the capacitors associated with such switching devices from the external voltage source.

  • Patent number: 7015648
Abstract: A method and apparatus for driving a plasma display panel (PDP) by which reset stabilization can be achieved are provided. In the method for driving a PDP, successive field periods, each including a reset period for initializing the state of respective cells, an address period for selectively discriminating cells to be turned on from cells not to be turned on and for performing an addressing operation, and a sustain period for discharging the addressed cells are performed. A reset stabilization period for inducing discharging in a discharge space between cells is additionally performed before the reset period if a rest period having a predetermined time duration is present between the sustain period of a preceding field and the reset period of the field. Therefore, the reset operation can be performed in a state where discharge cells between electrodes are sufficiently primed.

  • Patent number: 6947016
Abstract: A method for driving a plasma display panel includes applying an erasing pulse, a reset pulse and a scan pulse respectively in each of an erasing period, a reset period and a scan period. In a reset period, a reset pulse with a waveform of a sloped ramp pulse is applied to the scan electrode. The sloped ramp pulse induces a discharge between the scan electrode and the address electrode in the middle of the period while the pulse voltage increases. This prevents extremely high discharges between the scan electrode and the address electrode and improves the contrast of the display. An apparatus that implements such method is also disclosed.
