Publication number: 20170094713Abstract: In an application such as voice over LTE (VoLTE), a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle length may be as short as 20 milliseconds (ms). An inter-radio access technology (IRAT) or intra-RAT measurement may be performed during a 6 ms measurement gap with a 40 or 80 ms periodicity. This may greatly increase user equipment (UE) wakeup time duration during a DRX cycle, and thus the UE's power consumption to perform an inter/intra-RAT measurement. The UE can align a beginning of a UE generated inter radio access technology (IRAT) measurement gap with a beginning of a discontinuous reception (DRX) wakeup period. A secondary receive chain of the UE can perform the detection and measurement of a neighbor cell during the aligned measurement gap. This way, the primary receive chain of the UE can carry on communication tasks such as VoLTE call during the DRX wakeup period.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 25, 2015Publication date: March 30, 2017Inventors: Jin-Sheng SU, Tom CHIN

Patent number: 9585064Abstract: The present disclosure presents a method and an apparatus for network cognizant uplink transmissions during inter radio access technology (IRAT) handovers. For example, the method may include skipping inter radio access technology (IRAT) measurements during one or more dedicated channel (DCH) measurement occasion (DMO) or idle interval gaps of a transmission timing interval (TTI). The method further includes transmitting data on an uplink from a user equipment (UE) to a network entity during the entire duration of the TTI and determining whether the network entity is decoding the data transmitted on the uplink based on a response received from the network entity. As such, network cognizant uplink transmissions during inter radio access technology (IRAT) handovers may be achieved.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2014Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Zhengming Li, Jin-Sheng Su, Tom Chin

Publication number: 20160302114Abstract: For a multi-receive multi-subscriber identity module (SIM) UE, one SIM or subscription may help with measurements of another SIM or subscription to help address the issue of large latency caused by insufficient measurement gaps. A method of wireless communication at a user equipment with a first subscription and a second subscription includes forwarding a neighbor cell list from the first subscription to the second subscription when preparing for measurement. The method also includes performing, by the second subscription, measurements of neighbors from the neighbor cell list. The method further includes forwarding the measurements of neighbors from the neighbor cell list, from the second subscription, to the first subscription. The first subscription may measure a portion of the neighbors from the neighbor list while the second subscription measures another portion of the neighbor. The second subscription may or may not tune from a serving RAT to perform the measurements.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 5, 2015Publication date: October 13, 2016Inventors: Sachin JAIN, Jin-Sheng SU, Tom CHIN

Publication number: 20150230136Abstract: The present disclosure presents a method and an apparatus for downlink decoding enhancements during inter radio access technology (IRAT) handovers. For example, the method may include identifying at a user equipment (UE) that a transmission received on a downlink channel during a transmission timing interval (TTI) is configured by a network entity for a DCH Measurement Occasion (DMO) or an idle interval gap for IRAT measurements. The method further includes performing a transport format combination indicator (TFCI) decoding and a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) of the transmission received during the TTI and determining that data received during the TTI is valid when the TFCI decoding and the CRC are successful. As such, downlink decoding enhancements during IRAT handovers may be achieved.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 10, 2014Publication date: August 13, 2015Applicant: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Jin-Sheng SU, Zhengming Ll, Tom Chin

Patent number: 9036521Abstract: Techniques, systems and apparatus are described for reducing battery power consumption during a discontinuous reception and transmission mode of operation of a communication device. When operating in the discontinuous reception and transmission mode, a communication device can process radio frequency signals received from base stations to identify a set of active base stations based on a quality of the received radio frequency signals. This can reduce the total number of base stations to decode the corresponding system frame number (SFN). Based on the decoded SFN, the communication device can select a base station to perform hand-off.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2011Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Jin-Sheng Su, Vivek Ramaprasad

Patent number: 8774789Abstract: A scheduling technique is described for discontinuous transmission and reception. The scheduling technique may be implemented in a mobile communication device with multiple SIMs. The scheduling technique facilitates enhanced communication capability for the mobile communication device. In one implementation, the scheduling technique helps avoid substantial overlap between discontinuous receive cycles of the SIMs, for example by renegotiating a discontinuous transmit/receive offset if too much overlap exists. The renegotiation process may be incorporated into a future industry standard communication protocol (e.g., 3GPP release 11 or later), or may be implemented as an extension to an existing communication protocol.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2013Date of Patent: July 8, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Jin-Sheng Su, Jacobus C. Patent number: 8718685Abstract: A technique for receiving paging information helps a mobile communication device with multiple SIMs to better determine that a call is incoming. Despite the paging indicators for both SIMs arriving in a manner that prevents both the paging indicators from being received, the technique is able to ascertain whether a SIM is being paged, even when the other SIM is currently on the radio interface. As a result, the mobile communication device exhibits an increased ability to detect and alert the user to incoming calls.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2012Date of Patent: May 6, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Rami Mehio, Jin-Sheng Su

Publication number: 20130316764Abstract: A frequency control system enhances user equipment performance. The user equipment may include multiple SIMs, and the frequency control system may facilitate successful background page monitoring for a SIM that is not currently active. In particular, the frequency control system may track environmental factors that influence time base accuracy in the user equipment. When the background page monitoring activity happens for the inactive SIM, the frequency control system may apply a correction to the time base that facilitates successful reception of the paging indicators for the inactive SIM.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2012Publication date: November 28, 2013Applicant: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Rami Mehio, Jin-Sheng Su

Publication number: 20130150111Abstract: A technique for tuning the receiver (RX) synthesizer independently from the transmitter (TX) synthesizer helps a mobile communication device with multiple SIMs to concurrently monitor the paging channel of a first network associated with one SIM while transmitting on a second network associated with a second SIM. By independently tuning the RX and the TX synthesizers, each SIM card can maintain synchronization with the network without disruption of service in either network. As a result, the mobile communication device exhibits an increased ability to maintain communication sessions for two different networks, without the need for a second set of TX/RX synthesizer hardware.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 25, 2012Publication date: June 13, 2013Applicant: BROADCOM CORPORATIONInventors: Jin-Sheng Su, Zarko Tasev, Selim Tasiran, Rami Mehio
