  • Patent number: 7725090
Abstract: A technique is provided for automatic frequency offset correction in a wireless communication system. After demodulating and decoding a received signal in a receiver, channel estimation is also performed. The technique further includes re-encoding and re-modulating the decoded and demodulated signal with a coding and modulation scheme different from the received signal. The signal is reconstructed signal on the basis of the re-encoded and re-modulated signal and estimated channel characteristics. A frequency error is estimated based on the reconstructed signal and the original received signal. A threshold for a comparator is determined on the basis of the estimated offset amount determined by the comparison threshold and the estimated frequency offset.

  • Patent number: 7512172
Abstract: The embodiments of this invention relate generally to wireless telecommunication systems and, more particularly, to spread spectrum code division multiple access communication systems that employ a pilot-channel for path search and acquisition and for allocating fingers of a multifinger correlator, such as one found in a RAKE receiver. While the path search is an important part of the RAKE process, conventional path search methods require a large storage space for implementing the required correlation algorithms. One of the advantages of this invention is the noticeable reduction of the required storage space.

  • Patent number: 7245878
Abstract: A method of detecting a silent frame at a mobile station in a GSM transmission is disclosed. The method comprises first receiving a data burst intended for the mobile station. Then, a signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) is determined for the data burst. If the SINR is below a predetermined threshold, then the data burst is determined as from a silent frame.

  • Patent number: 7200194
Abstract: A method for processing a received signal at a mobile receiver of a wireless communications system is disclosed. The method comprises demodulating the received signal to obtain an analog base band signal and converting the analog base band signal into a digital base band signal. The signal strength of the digital base band signal is estimated and, using the estimation, the digital base band signal is scaled by a scaling factor. The digital base band signal is equalized into an equalized digital signal which is then rescaled by a resealing factor.

  • Patent number: 7171162
Abstract: A method of frequency estimation for a GSM communications system is disclosed. First, the a frequency control channel data burst is received and downsampled into a plurality of subsets. Then, the subsets are filtered using an auto-regressive filter. The filtered subsets are then correlated and summed to determine a parameter r. The estimated frequency is calculated based upon the parameter r.

  • Patent number: 7158795
Abstract: One of the common channels of the GSM system is the paging channel (PCH) for alerting the mobile station of an incoming call. The PCH message is scattered among four bursts as a result of coding, interleaving, and mapping processes before transmission. It is a waste of power for a handset to turn on and analyze all four bursts if the PCH message is a dummy one. Ideally, a handset needs to be able to make a determination whether a PCH message is a dummy one in as short of a time as possible and, if it is, turn off the power. Embodiments of this invention include methods and apparatus for enabling a handset to make this determination by merely analyzing the first received burst. Since most of the PCH messages are dummy ones, the proposed methods will cause noticeable savings in the power consumption of the GSM handsets.
