Publication number: 20210069645Abstract: A bipolar electrodialysis (BPED) cell is able to bipolar convert salt solutions into acid and base solutions. However, protons migrate through the anion exchange membranes and tend to neutralize the base solution. In a bipolar electrodialysis system described herein, multiple BPED cells are arranged to provide a multi-stage treatment system. Up to half, or up to one third, of the stages have cells with acid block anion membranes. The one or more stages with acid block anion membranes are located at the acid product output end of the system, where the acid concentration in the system is the highest. Replacing the traditional anion membranes in some of the stages with acid block anion membranes allows higher concentration products to be produced with moderate increase in energy consumption.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2019Publication date: March 11, 2021Inventors: Chengqian ZHANG, Wei LU, Jiyang XIA, Yongchang ZHENG, Bruce BATCHELDER, John H. Publication number: 20210032145Abstract: A method for treating a water-containing substance, including: mixing a water-containing substance with a solvent at a first temperature to obtain a mixture containing a solid substance and a liquid substance; conducting a first separation treatment of the mixture to obtain the solid substance and the liquid substance; and conducting a second separation treatment of the liquid substance obtained by the first separation treatment at a second temperature to obtain an aqueous phase and an organic phase, the organic phase contains the solvent. The mutual solubility of the solvent and water at the first temperature is higher than that of the solvent and water at the second temperature, so that the separation and recovery of water is achieved by liquid-liquid separation without phase transition in the method for treating a water-containing substance, so the energy consumption can be effectively reduced. The invention further relates to a corresponding device.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 19, 2020Publication date: February 4, 2021Inventors: Weihua Zhang, Jiyang Xia, Chunjie Liu, Lu He, Rui Chen

Patent number: 10221670Abstract: Produced water, for example from a steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) or cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) heavy oil recovery operation, is treated to recover water that is re-used to create steam. The produced water is treated in one or more thermal treatment devices such as an evaporator and a crystallizer. The thermal treatment device is seeded, for example with a calcium or magnesium salt. The thermal treatment device produces a blowdown or slurry comprising super-saturated solids and organic compounds. A solvent is added to the blowdown or slurry. The solids precipitate and are separated from the blowdown or slurry. The solvent may be recovered for re-use in treating more blowdown or slurry.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2013Date of Patent: March 5, 2019Assignee: BL TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventor: Jiyang Xia
