    Abstract: A laser package comprises a laser diode source having a first Fabry-Perot cavity between a highly reflective back facet and low reflective front facet for providing a first light output for an optical application. A light monitor is positioned adjacent to the back facet and aligned to receive a second light output from the laser diode back facet. A pigtail fiber having a lensed fiber input end is positioned from the laser diode front facet to form an optical coupling region and is aligned relative to the lasing cavity to receive the first light output into the fiber, the light output exiting the package for coupling to the application. A portion of the first light output from the lasing cavity is reflected off the lensed fiber input end with a portion directed back into the lasing cavity and another portion reflected off of the laser diode front facet.

    Abstract: An optical gain apparatus has a pump source providing pump energy at a pump wavelength to a gain medium that generates optical energy at a signal wavelength. To minimize disturbance from signal wavelengths appearing in a coupling path between the pump source and the gain medium, an optical attenuator is located in the coupling path that provides a significant degree of attenuation to signal wavelengths, while providing negligible attenuation of pump wavelengths. The attenuator may comprise a grating structure, such as a long period grating or a blazed grating. It may also comprise an angled coupling fiber that is oriented to reflect signal wavelengths out of the coupling path. The end of such a fiber would typically be formed into a microlens, such as a wedge-shaped lens or a biconic lens, and would preferably be coated with a material that is highly reflective at the signal wavelength, but anti-reflective at the pump wavelength. The microlens may also be angled relative to a longitudinal axis of the fiber.

    Abstract: Conventional master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) devices have experienced poor beam quality due to edge effects. The lateral current tailoring described herein was one attempt at improving the laser beam quality. Experimental results have indicated that this approach can make improvement in beam quality, using nonlinear leading edges in the gain stripe of MOPA amplifiers.
