Publication number: 20230377405Abstract: In some examples, a system and method for generating a payment instrument are described. The method includes receiving a unique signature that a recipient intends to associate with the payment instrument; verifying that the received feature meets an acceptability criterion; generating a representation of the received signature, wherein the representation is in a form capable of being physically associated with the payment instrument, and wherein association is established by embedding or exposing the representation on the payment instrument; and causing physical generation of the payment instrument having associated therewith the representation of the signature.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2023Publication date: November 23, 2023Applicant: Block, Inc.Inventors: Ayokunle Omojola, Robert Andersen, Daniele Perito, Joachim Bekmann

Patent number: 11455858Abstract: In some examples, a system and method for activating a physical payment card are described. The method includes receiving from a mobile device of a user a request for a physical payment card and first state data indicating a state of the mobile device or an application executing on the mobile device at a time of the request. The physical payment card is mailed to the user. The mobile device reads an identifier on a surface of the container via a sensor of the mobile device and sends the identifier data and a second state data from the time of the reading. The identifier data is compared to a user identifier in a customer profile of the user and the second state data is determined to correspond to the first state data. The physical payment card is then automatically activated.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2020Date of Patent: September 27, 2022Assignee: Block, Inc.Inventors: Ayokunle Omojola, Robert Andersen, Daniele Perito, Joachim Bekmann

Patent number: 11176607Abstract: Techniques for optimizing capital loan offers for merchants to maximize a potential benefit of the capital loans to the merchants. A service provider may receive merchant data and/or transaction data from a merchant. The service provider may determine merchant characteristics associated with the merchant based on the merchant data and/or transaction data. The service provider may associate the merchant with a merchant group, based on the merchant characteristics. The service provider may access data corresponding to capital loans previously offered to and/or accepted by merchants in the merchant group, to determine predictive factors of successful loans. Based on the predictive factors, the service provider may generate a capital loan for the merchant with a high probability of positive impact on a merchant business. The service provider may transmit a capital loan oiler to the merchant at a time determined to maximize acceptance and optimize a growth of the merchant business.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2018Date of Patent: November 16, 2021Assignee: SQUARE, INC.Inventors: Joachim Bekmann, Nicholas Halpern

Patent number: 10748130Abstract: In some examples, a system and method for activating a payment instrument. The method includes leveraging an activation feature associated with a payment instrument. The representation, obtained by a sensor, of the activation feature is received by the payment processing system. The payment processing system compares the representation of the activation feature with stored activation features corresponding to a user associated with the payment instrument. If the representation matches a user-associated activation feature, the payment processing system activates the payment instrument, wherein activating further includes granting the recipient access to a predetermined amount of funds through the activated payment instrument.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2016Date of Patent: August 18, 2020Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Ayokunle Omojola, Robert Andersen, Daniele Perito, Joachim Bekmann

Patent number: 10102528Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for real-time provisioning of new card numbers to users of a consumer computing system. A consumer computing system (“CCS”) may have servers and databases situated within a banking infrastructure in order to provide various features to users via a software application executed by a client device. The software application may interact with the CCS servers, such that the CCS servers and the software application offer the client device and the user certain features not ordinarily available in conventional banking infrastructures. These features may include the real-time provisioning of card numbers for a user's banking account. In operation, the client device may submit a request for a new card number to a CCS server, which may be generated in real-time and active in the payment stream when the card number is generated.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2017Date of Patent: October 16, 2018Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Brian Grassadonia, Ayokunle Omojola, Joachim Bekmann

Patent number: 10019641Abstract: Financial transaction card data can be entered by providing a picture of the card to a server programmed with a text recognition algorithm. The server can perform text recognition on the image at the same time that a consumer enters additional required data, such as a zip code. The server can perform as much text recognition processing as possible in the time the consumer is entering the additional data. Once the additional data is received, a signal can be provided to the server indicating that the user is now waiting for results of the text recognition process, meaning the server should provide them as quickly as possible. Once text recognition results are received, a consumer can make a selection to identify a character which the text recognition algorithm did not sufficiently identify. Based on known account number constraints, the user selection can cause multiple characters to be identified.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2016Date of Patent: July 10, 2018Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Joachim Bekmann, Fei Guo

Patent number: 9530128Abstract: Techniques and arrangements for authorizing a payment instrument by capturing an image of the payment instrument at a point-of-sale (POS) device and uploading the image to a payment service, which performs optical character recognition (OCR) on the image to identify an identifier of the payment instrument. The payment service may then use the identifier to authorize the payment instrument for a cost of a transaction performed at the POS device.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2014Date of Patent: December 27, 2016Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Joachim Bekmann, Nathan David Spindel, Rong Yan
