  • Publication number: 20070278722
Abstract: A hoisting mechanism for raising a ladle filled with liquid steel from a transfer vehicle to immersion pipes of a vacuum treatment tank of an RH degasser. Two lifting arms are provided, one end of which can be brought into engagement with a support device formed on the ladle, and a bearing end of the arms is supported in a stationary saddle support comprised in such a way of a runway, disposed on the bearing ends of the lifting arms and having the shape of a circular arc, and of a path of rolling contact, adapted to axially fixedly guide the runway during pivoting of the lifting arms, that due to shifting of the point of load introduction in the saddle support occurring during a raising movement, reduction of a horizontal movement of the ladle occurs.

  • Patent number: 5393037
Abstract: A smelting unit having a furnace vessel (11) which is mounted on a furnace rocking cradle (13) and which can be closed by a cover (12), and bar electrodes (28) which can be lowered into the furnace vessel (11) and which can be raised and lowered by means of electrode lift devices (30), in which the electrode lift devices (30) are carried by a portal assembly (31). In a lowered position the portal assembly (31) lies on a support holder (33) of the vessel substructure (14) or the furnace rocking cradle (13) respectively and in that position can be tilted with the furnace vessel (11). It can be released from the furnace vessel (11) and pivoted to the side by a lift post (43) of a stationary lifting/pivoting mechanism (40). When the unit has two vessels which are arranged side-by-side, the bar electrodes can be associated alternately with one vessel or the other by means of the lifting/pivoting mechanism (40).

  • Patent number: 5264020
Abstract: In a smelting plant including two melting furnaces which are arranged in juxtaposed relationship and which are operated alternately, wherein the furnace gases which are produced in the melting process are respectively introduced into the other melting furnace for the purposes of preheating the charging material, associated with each melting furnace is a shaft which is loaded with charging material, and the waste gases from the furnace which is in the melting mode of operation are introduced from the shaft, after charging of the other furnace, through the cover of the other furnace, and are removed from the shaft thereof. That procedure, throughout the entire smelting operation, permits preheating of charging material and filtration of the furnace gases when they are passed through the charging material.

  • Patent number: 5153894
Abstract: This invention is directed to a smelting plant with shaft-like charging material preheater. In a smelting plant with an electric arc furnace (1) and a charging material preheater (2) of shaft configuration arranged laterally on the furnace, the outer walls of the charging material preheater in the lower region thereof are formed by the vessel wall (5) of the furnace while in the region thereabove they are formed by the walls of a shaft which is fixed in a holding structure (27). By a horizontal relative movement between the furnace vessel (3) and the holding structure (27) together with the vessel cover (6), without being impeded by the shaft (10) charging material can be charged from a scrap basket directly into the furnace vessel or through the displaced shaft into different regions of the furnace vessel (3). Charging material can be retained in the shaft by means of a blocking member (51) therein, and heated up during the refining phase.

  • Patent number: 5117438
Abstract: In a smelting unit comprising an arc furnace and at least one shaft-like charging material preheater which is arranged laterally on the furnace vessel of the arc furnace and the interior of which is connected in a region adjoining its bottom to the interior of the furnace vessel by way of a connecting zone, and in addition burners open in the lower region of the charging material preheater, in a sump mode of operation after the tapping step, of the amount of charging material which is required for the next bath of molten material, a part thereof is charged directly into the furnace vessel in order to reduce the smelting time. That part of the charging material is preheated in a preheating chamber which is connected downstream of the charging material preheater.

  • Patent number: 4682341
Abstract: In an electric arc furnace having a fluid-cooled electrode support arm which is provided with an electrode holding means, the outside of the electrode support arm is plated with cooper and the electrode holding means is electrically insulated with respect to the support arm, by way of which the electrode current is carried to a contact jaw that bears against the electrode. In an electric arc furnace with for example three parallel electrode support arms the electrode current is taken partly by way of a heavy-current tube and partly by way of the electrode support arm in order to balance the different reactance in relation to the two other electrode support arms. In order to eliminate reactance asymmetry, a reactance loop is provided in at least one heavy-current conductor between the transformer of the electric arc furnace and the associated electrode support arm.

  • Patent number: 4674102
Abstract: For the purposes of charging an electric arc furnace the cover (3) of the furnace is lifted somewhat and, being held by a cover carrier mechanism (10, 11), pivoted to the side. The cover carrier mechanism (10, 11) is connected to a portal structure (13) which is rotatable about a vertical axis. At the same time horizontal electrode support arms (5, 6, 7), with the electrodes secured to the free ends thereof, are pivoted to the side. The electrode support arms are secured to vertically displaceable lift columns (19, 20, 21). The lift columns are arranged in one plane and have roller guides (15a, 15b; 16a, 16b) which are disposed in two horizontal planes. The rollers of each pair (15a, 15b . . . ) are so inclined that their axes of rotation include an angle of between 90.degree. and 160.degree.. In that way moments about vertical axes upon pivotal movement of the arrangement and in operation of the furnace can be carried.

  • Patent number: 4603424
Abstract: In a fluid-cooled clamp member (1) of a composite electrode (2) of an electric arc furnace, disposed in the flow path (13) for the coolant is a shut-off device (14) which is biassed in the closure direction, having an actuating member (15) by means of which the shut-off device (14) is put into the open condition in opposition to the biassing force, when a replaceable lower portion (2) of the composite electrode, which is subject to burning away, is screwed on. In the event of fracture of the lower portion in the region of the nipple (5), the flow path (13) is closed off by the actuating member (15) being released. The screwthreaded nipple is additionally protected by means of a protective cap which is screwed on to the screwthreaded nipple, the cap having an external screwthread corresponding to the internal screwthread of the lower portion (2).
