  • Publication number: 20050124723
Abstract: A wood preservative, characterized in that it includes (a) 0.5 to 50 parts of a biocidal quaternary ammonium compound or of a mixture of biocidal quaternary ammonium compounds; (b) 0.5 to 50 parts of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid having 6 to 30 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such carboxylic acids; (c) 0 to 5 parts of additional biocidal substances; (d) 0 to 20 parts of one or more binders, colorants and/or pigments; (e) 0 to 20 parts of one or more additives for imparting hydrophobicity, moisture regulation and/or drying; and (f) 40 to 99 parts of a nonpolar organic solvent, with the proviso that the ratio between components (a) and (b) is between 1:3 and 3:1.

  • Publication number: 20040146733
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the protective treatment of wood, derived timber products and wood-type substrates by means of thermal treatment at 60-250° C. and additional treatment using an amine and/or amine derivative of general formula (Ia), (Ib) or (Ic) wherein R1 and R4 independently represent C6-24 alkyl; R2 and R3 independently represent C1-24 alkyl or (CH2)—NH2; R5, R6, R8 and R9 independently represent C1-24 Alkyl; R7 represents C6-24 alkyl or benzyl; R10 independently represents C1-24 alkyl or —[(CH2)2—O]nR11 where n=1-20; R11 represents hydrogen or optionally substituted phenyl; and X− represents a monovalent inorganic or organic anion or an equivalent of a polyvalent inorganic or organic anion. The additional treatment can also be carried out using a corresponding salt the wood treated according to said method has good resistance even to harmful organisms which cannot be reliably controlled by means of only a heat treatment.

  • Patent number: 6362370
Abstract: Wood preservatives having biocidal properties which include quaternary ammonium compounds of general formula (I): wherein R1 is a C8-18-alkyl group or an optionally substituted benzyl group, R2 is a C8-18-alkyl group, R3 is a C1-4-alkyl group or a group of the formula —[CH2—CH2—O]n—H, R4 is a C1-4-alkyl group, n is a number from 0.5 to 8, preferably from 1 to 5, and A31 is the anion of an organic carboxylic acid which contains 2 to 12 C atoms and carries at least one hydroxyl, amino or sulfonic acid group. The wood preservatives also penetrate deeply into the wood without the use of pressure, and have only a mild corrosive action on metals. Furthermore, a process for treating timbers with these compositions, concentrates for the preparation thereof, the use of new and known quaternary ammonium compounds in wood preservatives and new quaternary ammonium compounds and their use as biocides.
