    Abstract: There is now provided a carbodiimide or polycarbodiimide of the formula: ##STR1## where the R radicals are identical or different and are selected from the group consisting of --NHCONHR.sup.1 --, --NHCONR.sup.1 R.sup.2 --, and --NHCOOR.sup.3 --, where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may be identical or different and are alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl, and R.sup.3 is identical to R.sup.1 or is alkoxypolyoxyalkylene, and n is an integer from 0 to 10.There is also provided an ester containing plastic which contains this carbodiimide as an anti-hydrolysis agent. The plastics may be a polyurethane cellular or non-cellular elastomer or thermoplastic.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of polyester polyols having an acid number of less than 1, a hydroxyl number of approximately 20 to about 400, and having a functionality of efficaciously 2 to 3, wherein polycarboxylic acids and/or their anhydrides and multivalent alcohols are polycondensed, preferably in the absence of common esterification catalysts, at temperatures of from about 150.degree. to 250.degree. C. and contain units having the structure --OCH.sub.2 --CH(CH.sub.3)--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O-- which are bound together and have an average functionality of from about 2 to 3, a hydroxyl number of from about 25 to 300, an acid number of less than about 2, and a viscosity of from about 200 to 10.sup.5 mPas at 25.degree. C. The polyols are prepared through polycondensation in the molten state, in the presence of or absence of esterification catalysts, of an aliphatic di- and/or polycarboxylic acid and/or di- and/or polycarboxylic acid ahydride and 2-methyl-1,4-butanediol or mixtures comprised of 2-methyl-1,4-butanediol and at least one linear or branched, aliphatic di- through tetravalent alcohol, which optionally contains ether bridges and has a 2-methyl-1,4-butanediol content of at least 20 weight percent based on the weight of the alcohol mixture.
