Abstract: A method and system for managing overlapping windows on a computer screen of a computer system. A hook filter intercepts an event that has occurred. An association of the hook filter with the event was established prior to the occurrence of the event. The event is characterized by an overlapping condition in which a floating window partially or totally overlaps an active window on the computer screen. A software application is associated with the active window. Response to intercepting the event, the hook filter detects the overlapping condition. Response to detecting the overlapping condition, the hook filter eliminates the overlapping condition to make the active window totally visible.

The method includes: converting header names into canonical form, wherein a canonical key represents at least one equivalent header name, and wherein a canonical key has a string and an integer value; providing a mapping between the header names and the canonical keys; and searching for a header name using the canonical key by sequential search using integer comparison.

Abstract: An RFID system and tag, and a method for identifying objects using an RFID system are disclosed. In an embodiment, an RFID tag comprises a microchip for storing an identification sequence, a tag antenna coupled with the microchip for receiving and transmitting the RF signal; and a ferrous metal portion disposed near the IC and the tag antenna. The ferrous metal portion is sensitive to, and heats up when subjected to, magnetic induction. The heat of the ferrous metal is propagated to the RFID tag such that the tag reaches its operating temperature more quickly.

Abstract: An approach is provided for collaboratively synchronizing devices in an ad hoc network. No device is acting as a master device or base station dictating time slot allocation to devices. A first device communicates with the other devices by a Media Access Control scheme based on time frames having time slots. Responsive to a determination that a current time slot allocated to a second device is occurring, a determination that a Boolean value selected according to a predetermined probability is true, and a transmission of a map of allocations of time slots to the devices, the first device determines the map indicates a conflict in which the same time slot is allocated to the first device and another device. The first device resolves the conflict by allocating another time slot to the first device, so that each time slot is allocated to no more than one corresponding device.

Abstract: A virtual gateway for communicating between one or more remote machine to machine capillary networks and a local base transceiver station includes an interface for communicating with a local base transceiver station. The interface emulates a Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol in the communication. The virtual gateway also includes an interface for communicating with one or more remote capillary networks and a SIM emulation component for emulating a SIM card. The SIM card is used in association with the interface for communicating with the local base transceiver station.

Abstract: A method and system for utilizing an instant messaging environment. An instant messaging client is created in association with each respective end user of at least two end users. Each instant messaging client in association with its respective end user includes at least two zones. Each zone corresponds exclusively to a unique end user. Each zone of the at includes at least two textboxes contiguously distributed within each zone. The at least two zones of each instant messaging client is configured to include a write-only zone specific to the respective end user and a read-only zone specific to each end user of all other end users exclusive of the respective end user. Each instant messaging client is provided to each respective end user of the at least two end users.

Abstract: A masterless time slot allocation technique that collaboratively synchronizes, at a time slot level, devices communicating in an ad hoc network. Responsive to determining a current time slot allocated to a first device is occurring, the first device transmits a map to the other devices. The map includes an allocation of time slots to the devices, including indicators for whether each time slot is free, busy or overbooked, devices that own the time slots, and how recently information associated with each time slot was updated. After receiving the map, a second device determines a conflict in which the same time slot is allocated to the second device and to another device. The conflict is resolved by allocating another time slot to the second device and the result of resolving the conflict is each slot is allocated to no more than one device.

Abstract: A biometrically activated radio frequency identification (RFID) tag including a fingerprint detection matrix, an antenna control circuit, and a biometric identification chip. The fingerprint detection matrix acquires biometric data indicative of a user's identity and passes it to the biometric identification chip. The biometric identification chip compares the biometric data acquired by the fingerprint detection matrix to biometric data stored thereupon. The antenna control circuit activates the RFID tag selectively dependent upon the result of the comparison of the acquired and stored biometric data.

Abstract: The invention provides a system for retrieving at boot time user data stored on a computer. The computer comprises a processor coupled through a system bus to I/O devices and to a system memory, the computer further having a basic input output system (BIOS) unit operatively coupled to the system bus for loading a computer operating system during a computer boot procedure, wherein the system memory being accessible to the computer operating system via the system bus. The system comprises a boot adapter for connecting the system bus to a boot bus, a boot memory coupled to the boot bus wherein the boot memory comprises storage locations for storing the predefined user data, and program code means coupled to the BIOS unit. The program code means are operative for loading a boot operating system during the computer boot procedure, the boot operating system having instructions for accessing the boot memory during the computer boot procedure.

Abstract: A method for sharing data contained on a peripheral device amongst a plurality of blade servers is disclosed. The method includes storing a copy of data from a peripheral device to a memory device. The memory device is partitioned into at least ‘n’ memory areas, each memory area storing one copy of the data. The method also includes assigning one of the at least ‘n’ memory areas to each of a plurality ‘n’ of servers. The method also includes establishing communication between the plurality of servers and the plurality of assigned memory areas via a switch controller. The switch controller is configured to access the plurality of assigned memory areas via a processor.

Abstract: System enabling the cancellation of previously-sent e-mail comprising a data transmission network, wherein a plurality of users are connected to the network, each user being able as a sender to forward an e-mail over the network to at least another user as a recipient connected to the network, and wherein a message transfer agent MTA is associated with each user for sending the e-mail when the user acts as a sender and delivering the e-mail when the user acts as a recipient. Each MTA includes a cancel mailbox for transmitting a cancellation message to the recipient(s) when the user associated with the MTA is a sender wanting to cancel a previously-sent e-mail or for managing the cancellation of e-mails in the mailbox of the user associated with the MTA upon receiving the cancellation message from the sender when this user is a recipient.
