  • Patent number: 4360863
Abstract: A luminaire for roadway lighting using a one-piece reflector developing at least two collimated beams in each longitudinal direction. The collimated beams impinge on sloping faces of a refractor to diverge the beams into a regular pattern covering the street with a sharp cutoff at predetermined longitudinal distances from the luminaire. The refractor employs a compressed parabola comprised of radial sections of comparatively large focal length with steps and risers. The complex shape of the one-piece reflector may readily be produced by a reflector finish applied to a molded plastic matrix. In the luminaire, the prismatic surfaces of the inclined walls of the refractor diverge the formerly collimated beams in a carefully controlled manner to produce very uniform distribution of light.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 16, 1980
Date of Patent: November 23, 1982
Assignee: International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation
Inventors: Jocelyn T. Barnes, Chester A. Hard, III, Billy L. Shelby, Charles H. Loch

  • Patent number: 4175661
Abstract: A stackable light refractor comprises an annular hollow tubular shaped element of light transmissive material having a large end and a pair of spaced apart inner and outer surfaces tapering toward a small end. The outer surface of the refractor includes a plurality of annular outwardly projecting ridges of prism shaped cross-section spaced between the larger and smaller ends. One of the ridges, spaced a distance closer to the larger end than the smaller end is substantially larger than the adjacent ridges and extends outwardly of the adjacent ridges on either side.
