  • Publication number: 20240026739
Abstract: A pack system for a downhole assembly is provided. One end of the pack system is connected to a drill bit for drilling a wellbore, the other end of the pack system interfaces with a motor to receive torque. The pack system described herein has a simple design that reduces the number of parts, eliminates some seals and shims, and relies on a portion of drilling mud for lubrication. As a result, wear on parts of the system is greatly reduced and the longevity of the system is greatly increased. The hardness of various components of the system in key areas is increased, for example, with carbide, to further reduce wear and increase longevity. In addition, the simpler, more balanced arrangement of components allows for reduced vibration and high rotational speeds, which improves the performance of the overall downhole assembly.

  • Publication number: 20210363834
Abstract: A universal coupling system for a drill string is provided. The system comprises a double wedge box having a first box connection opposite a second box connection. The system also comprises a first double wedge and a second double wedge each releasably coupled to the double wedge box and each having a first wedge protrusion offset from a second wedge protrusion. The first wedge protrusion of each of the first double wedge and the second double wedge are received in the first box connection and the second box connection, respectively. The system also includes a first adaptor and a second adaptor each having a box connection opposite a pin connection. Each box connection of the first adaptor and the second adaptor receives the second wedge protrusion of each of the first and the second double wedges.

  • Patent number: 9850709
Abstract: An improved sealed bearing pack for a downhole mud motor is disclosed. More specifically, embodiments of the present invention relate to a mud motor for straight and directional drilling with a sealed bearing pack designed to withstand higher torques, loads, and pressure operations and with a reduced failure rate. In some embodiments, the sealed bearing pack has more lateral support for improved horizontal drilling and extended operational life. Thus, one embodiment includes an adapter housing extending the length of the outer housing and a bearing within the adapter housing for increased support. Additionally, some embodiments include two thrust bearing assemblies for improved operations and reduced failures. Various embodiments include a longer flow sleeve than prior art sealed bearing packs.

  • Publication number: 20150176342
Abstract: An improved arrangement for bearings for a drive-shaft for off-set or bent drive subassemblies between a mud-motor and a drill-bit in a bottom-hole assembly for directional drilling is provided by using elliptically shaped rollers housed in mating slots in the end or ends of the drive shaft to roll on their axes which are approximately perpendicular to the radius of the shaft and approximately aligned with the shaft's longitudinal axis, to engage with other mating slots in driven or driving housings attached to respectively the mud motor and to the drill's driven bit. The rollers are designed so that as the shaft pivots around a centroid of its tip end(s) the shape of the bearings' outer surface rotates within the slots with improved loading characteristics, with more bearing-to-slot surface area and less point loading than arrangements in the prior art, such as tapered roller bearings or ball bearings.
