Abstract: Alfalfa and other cellulosic agricultural crops and crop derivatives are treated with ammonia under pressure to increase the true protein availability and the cellulose digestibility. The materials can be evacuated from the reaction vessel either gradually or explosively, with explosive evacuation providing a dust free product having a greener color. The ammonia is recycled by recovering it and recompressing it for reuse in treating an additional quantity of crop.
