    Abstract: A method of processing data from a co-located hydrophone-geophone pair of seismic receivers of an ocean-bottom cable system. Ambient noise is obtained for the hydrophone and geophone. A relative noise signal is determined by finding the normalized difference between geophone and hydrophone noise signals. Geophone and hydrophone data signals are then scaled by an amount equal to the relative noise signal.

    Abstract: A self-orienting seismic detector for detecting vertical acceleration regardless of the device's horizontal orientation. The detector comprises a housing fitted with diaphragms capable of generating signals. A mass is internally suspended within the housing between the diaphragms by means of a filament which is connected at each of its ends to one of the diaphragms. Vertical motion of the detector causes internal displacement of the mass within the housing. Motion by the mass within the cylinder is translated by the filament to the diaphragms which generate signals which may then be recorded. The detector may be incorporated within or attached to an undersea cable to form a seismic detection system primarily suitable for placement on an ocean bottom, but which may be employed in a towed array. In a primary embodiment, the detector is sealed from external pressure changes such that the stresses placed upon the detector's diaphragms will be governed by particle acceleration changes rather than pressure changes.

    Abstract: In dual-sensor, bottom-cable marine seismic exploration where hydrophone/geophone pairs are deployed on the marine bottom, coupling imperfections between the geophones and the marine bottom contribute to differences between the impulse response of the geophones and the impulse response of the hydrophones. To correct for the coupling imperfection, a filter is designed which compensates for the inherent impulse response differences as well as response differences caused by the imperfect coupling. Preferably, the filter is designed using a calibration procedure prior to production shooting. First, the response of a hydrophone and geophone to a seismic wave is recorded. Then, these recorded responses are transformed into the frequency domain. Once transformed, the response of the hydrophone is divided by the response of the geophone to produce a filtering function.

    Abstract: A processing method is disclosed for marine seismic surveying which utilizes two vertically spaced marine streamers each having a plurality of seismic detectors contained therein. A seismic energy source positioned at or near the surface of a body of water is utilized to generate seismic waves which propagate into earth formations below the water and reflect back up to be detected at each streamer. Seismic waves also reflect from the water/air interface back down toward the streamers and must be separated from the upgoing seismic waves to enhance the accuracy of the resultant trace. The seismic waves detected at two selected vertically displaced seismic detectors are combined to form a sum signal which is then combined with a scaled time integral of a difference signal to form a resultant signal which preserves either the upgoing or downgoing seismic waves.

The system includes a seismic energy source, a detector, a wavefield separator, a time-shift element, and an element for generating an output signal representative of an additive linear combination of time-aligned primary and ghost signal components. The system's output is suitable for further pre-stack processing, e.g., NMO correction.
