  • Patent number: 5835901
Abstract: A real-time learning (RTL) neural network is capable of indicating when an input feature vector is novel with respect to feature vectors contained within its training data set, and is capable of learning to generate a correct response to a new data vector while maintaining correct responses to previously learned data vectors without requiring that the neural network be retrained on the previously learned data. The neural network has a sensor for inputting a feature vector, a first layer and a second layer. The feature vector is supplied to the first layer which may have one or more declared and unused nodes. During training, the input feature vector is clustered to a declared node only if it lies within a hypervolume defined by the declared node's automatically selectable reject radius, else the input feature vector is clustered to an unused node. Clustering in overlapping hypervolumes is determined by a decision surface.

  • Patent number: 4518309
Abstract: High speed pipe handling apparatus is disclosed. A pipe gripping system includes fluid pressure piston-and-cylinder propulsion systems to manipulate pipe gripping slip members, and includes a mechanical latching system that locks the pistons to the cylinders in the pipe-gripping configuration by latch members. The latching system is released by application of fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 4444536
Abstract: Disclosed is a rig for working on wells, and including a pair of continuous chains for moving a pair of pipe holders along a mast. Each of the two pipe holders is fixed to a point in each chain. The chains are driven along parallel paths by twin motors with linked drive shafts. The motors are mounted on the top of the mast so that only one side of the closed loop on each chain is loaded when the pipe is being pulled from a well. One of the pipe holders may comprise a snubbing head which may be operated in reciprocal motion for high speed snubbing of pipe into a well.

  • Patent number: 4263936
Abstract: An inside blowout preventer assembly for connection into an earth boring drill string has improved features for preventing erosion. The blowout preventer assembly allows downward flow during normal drilling, but prevents upward flow if the flow rate is above a selected amount, to prevent a blowout. The assembly includes a valve body with a longitudinal passage having a throat section. A recess passage intersects the throat section and contains a ball. The ball is movable from the recess passage into the throat section, where it seals against a seat to stop upward flow. An equalizing passage of selected size and configuration extends from the base of the recess passage to the longitudinal passage. The ball is of lesser diameter than the recess passage for allowing downward flow through the recess passage and the equalizing passage. This prevents the ball from being drawn by pressure differential into the throat section during downward flow, reducing turbulence and erosion.

  • Patent number: 4074774
Abstract: A drilling machine and relatively small mast are mounted on a pivotal support which permits the drilling machine, mast and drill pipe employed in the assembly to be inclined as required to drill a non-vertical bore hole. The drilling machine is preferably a fluid pressure-operated snubber device which includes a stationary lower gripping head and a vertically reciprocable, upper gripping head operable for rotating drill pipe and for running the drill pipe into and out of the well bore. An internal drill string anchor carried by a traveling block suspended in the mast engages and supports the upper end of the drill string extending from the snubber and also provides drilling fluids to the string. A rotatable seal and support assembly in the anchor maintains a fluid seal and permits the drill pipe to rotate relative to the non-rotating traveling block.

  • Patent number: 4071084
Abstract: Disclosed is a retrievable, weight set well packer which may be tightened in set configuration by rotation of the tubing string, and which may be released from set configuration by longitudinal movement of the tubing string. Locking means maintain the packer set when the tubing string is raised slightly to open a bypass between the tubing string and the set packer. Continued raising of the tubing string releases the locking means to permit the packer to be retrieved. Dual opposed spreader cones keep the packer set against well pressure differentials acting from either above or below the packer. Pressure responsive means are also employed to increase the forces anchoring the tubing string against movement to open the bypass as differential well pressures tend to so move the tubing string.

  • Patent number: 4069879
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus for manipulating pipe members in operating on a well, including a frame that is movable along the floor of the drilling derrick and which is equipped with a clamp for guiding pipe members toward and away from the well bore, guides for vertically orienting pipe members and aligning them with the well bore, and powered tongs for making and breaking threaded joints between pipe members and the drill string located in the well bore. In a method of manipulating pipe members in operating on a well with a mast-supported elevator, pipe members supported by the elevator are guided toward and away from the well bore area by a pipe manipulator movable along the working floor, aligned by the pipe manipulator, and threadedly joined to, or disengaged from, the drill string in the well bore by powered tongs carried by the pipe manipulator.

  • Patent number: 4069840
Abstract: A check valve for permitting fluid flow in one direction and preventing flow in the reverse direction may comprise: a tubular body having a longitudinal flowbore therethrough; an annular seat within the flowbore; an inclined cylindrical pocket communicating with the flowbore; and a ball member movable between the pocket and sealing engagement with the seat in the flowbore to permit fluid to flow in one direction but blocking flow in the reverse direction.

  • Patent number: 4049055
Abstract: The assembly is supported and operated by a tubing string and includes an hydraulically set packer carrying a production screen and a removable gravel pack apparatus. The packer is set, gravel is packed about the screen and the gravel pack apparatus is then removed from the set packer by disengaging a pin and slot connection. The gravel pack apparatus and attached screen may be subsequently re-engaged with the packer for regraveling. The packer is equipped with resilient seal means and a plurality of radially movable anchoring slips which are set in sealing and anchoring engagement, respectively, with a surrounding well conduit by an hydraulic setting mechanism. The gravel pack apparatus cooperates with the set packer to form a series of separate, axially extending, flow passages which may be selectively opened or closed.

  • Patent number: 4024925
Abstract: Apparatus for manipulating equipment by selectively holding it in a gripping device mounted on a movable closed-loop belt. In the particular embodiment shown, a swivel and elevator combination is mounted on a brace which runs along a track in the derrick of a well workover rig. A belt chain is joined to the brace to form a closed loop, and is motor-driven to raise or lower the swivel and elevator arrangement to move drill pipe or casing into or out of a well.

  • Patent number: 4018272
Abstract: Disclosed is a retrievable, hydraulically set well packer which is locked in set position without need for tubing rotation and may be released from set position by shearing a retrieving link with either a straight pull on the production tubing or by the application of high pressure through the tubing. Dual, opposed cones are employed for retaining the packer slips anchored irrespective of the direction of the pressure differential acting on the packer and without need for an extra sleeve to transmit pressure induced forces to the cones. Compression seals are employed to hold the slips firmly anchored against longitudinal displacement in both directions without reliance on the presence of a pressure differential across the set packer. The seals are employed as two separate assemblies which are positioned above and below the slips to isolate a portion of the pressure induced forces from the retrieving link.

  • Patent number: 4013178
Abstract: Disclosed is a pipe handling device, power-driven in three degrees of freedom, for manipulating pipe that is essentially vertically oriented. Specific embodiments described relate to racking and unracking drill pipe in a drilling derrick. A maneuverable arm, mounted on the derrick at an appropriate height, grips the pipe, lifts it and moves it to another location. A cable-assisted embodiment designed to handle heavy drill collars features a shock absorber assembly.

  • Patent number: 3958836
Abstract: Eyes in adjacent track segments in a bulldozer type track are secured to each other by a pin which is provided with a grease fitting and connecting passages for communicating lubricant to the bearing surfaces in the linkage. The pins are housed in a metal sleeve which cooperates with resilient seals to retain the lubricant in the linkage and to keep external matter away from the linkage bearing surfaces. The pin is held in place by removable retaining means so that the linkage may be separated and reattached without special equipment.
