    Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument includes a pair of first and second elongated shafts each having an end effector attached to a distal end thereof and a handle. The handle is movable from a first position wherein the end effectors are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the end effectors are closer relative to one another. Each of the elongated shafts includes a hinge plate which mounts atop a pivot assembly for effecting movement of the end effectors relative to one another. The instrument also includes a hinge assembly made from an overmold composition which encapsulates and secures the hinge plates and the pivot assembly. The overmold composition is made from an electrically insulating material which insulates the end effectors from one another.

    Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument for fragmenting, cutting and coagulating tissue is described which includes a handpiece, a tool assembly and a nosecone. Preferably, the tool assembly is formed of an electrically conductive material and includes a first end having a distal tool tip and a second end adapted to be connected to an acoustic vibrator. The tool assembly at least partially defines an aspiration channel and is preferably supported by the handpiece. The nosecone is positioned about a distal end of the handpiece and a proximal end of the tool assembly in a fluid tight manner. A switch assembly for controlling delivery of electrosurgical energy to the tool assembly is supported on the nosecone. Preferably, the switch assembly is overmolded onto an inner housing of the nosecone by an electrically insulative material. In a preferred embodiment, the electrosurgical instrument may include an ionizable gas supply channel which communicates with an electrode to provide plasma coagulation.

    Abstract: An electrosurgical pencil is provided and includes an elongated housing having an electrocautery blade supported therein and extending distally from the housing. The electrocautery blade is connected to a source of electrosurgical energy. The pencil further includes a plurality of activation switches supported on the housing for activating electrocautery blade. Each activation switch is configured and adapted to selectively complete a control loop extending from the source of electrosurgical energy upon actuation thereof. In use, actuation of at least one of the plurality of activation switches produces a dividing with hemostatic effect at the electrocautery blade. The electrosurgical pencil further includes at least one voltage divider network supported on the housing. The at least one voltage divider network is electrically connected to the source of electrosurgical energy and controls the intensity of electrosurgical energy being delivered to the electrosurgical pencil.
