  • Publication number: 20190218873
Abstract: In composite slips and downhole tools using composite slips, there are provided one or more slip segments. The slip segments comprise a body and one or more inserts. The body is a composite material having an outer surface. The inserts each have an upper surface and each of the inserts is mechanically affixed into the body such that the upper surface of each of the inserts extends at least partially out from the outer surface. In some embodiments, the inserts are oval or stadium shaped and have a shoulder that locks the insert from moving by interaction with a shoulder in a cavity wall of the body.

  • Patent number: 8800605
Abstract: A composite mandrel includes a filament-wound composite tube, and composite material molded over the filament-wound composite tube. For example, the composite material includes chopped fibers and a matrix of thermoset resin. The chopped fibers are arranged in layers upon the filament-wound composite tube, and the chopped fibers in each of the layers are randomly oriented along first and second orthogonal directions in each of the layers. The composite material includes at least one sheet of the composite material wound over the filament-wound tube, and at least one strip of the composite material wound over the sheet of the composite material and forming a head on the composite mandrel. An internal cavity of the filament-wound composite tube may provide a lumen for the composite mandrel. The internal cavity may be threaded to receive a removable bridge plug.

  • Patent number: 8047279
Abstract: A downhole tool has a mandrel with slip assemblies positioned thereon above and below a packer element. The slip assemblies are positioned in a manner to anchor the downhole tool in the well. The slip assemblies include a slip ring which has a plurality of slip segments. Each slip segment has inserts disposed in cavities therein. The cavities are oriented such that the longitudinal central axis of each cavity is parallel to the longitudinal central axis of each of the other cavities in the slip segment.

  • Patent number: 7779906
Abstract: A downhole tool has a mandrel and an expandable packer element for sealingly engaging the well. A slip assembly is positioned on the mandrel and will anchor the downhole tool in the well. The slip assembly may include a slip ring that moves from an unset to a set position. A retaining ring is disposed about the slip ring and will hold the slip ring in the unset position until sufficient force is applied to break the retaining ring. The retaining ring may comprise a retaining band with a dampener to suppress the spring effect experienced by the retaining band when it breaks upon the application of force.
