  • Patent number: 8905029
Abstract: An airway management device is provided that may adjust the inflation level of a cuff associated with an endotracheal tube. The cuff inflation may be adjusted in response to an increase in carbon dioxide levels above the cuff, which may indicate a poor seal of the cuff against the tracheal walls, as well in response to a measured intracuff pressure. By using information about the seal quality of the cuff together with information about the cuff pressure, the inflation of the cuff can be adjusted to minimize cuff inflation pressure while maintaining a high quality tracheal seal.

  • Patent number: 8684175
Abstract: An inflatable cuff may be adapted to seal a patient's trachea when associated with an endotracheal tube. Packaging and transporting of these cuffs while inflated may provide for decreased wrinkles and thereby improved sealing of the trachea. Provided is a package for a medical device with an inflatable region, comprising a substantially non-stretchable region that substantially conforms to the shape of the inflatable region of the medical device when the inflatable region is inflated.

  • Patent number: 8062221
Abstract: A sensor for carbon dioxide detection may be adapted to have reduced water permeability. A sensor is provided that is appropriate for use in an aqueous medium. The sensor has a barrier with reduced water permeability, but that is permeable to carbon dioxide, that separates the sensor components from the aqueous medium.

  • Publication number: 20080047562
Abstract: A surgical/medical tube such as an endotracheal tube (10) is provided having a tubular body (12) equipped with an inflatable cuff (22) and respective, separate cuff inflation and fluid removal lumens (24, 30). A fluid removal opening (32) communicates with lumen (30) and is located proximal to cuff (22). A projection (38, 38a, 40, or 42) is located in close proximity to the opening (32) and is configured to prevent contact between the opening (32) and the adjacent tracheal wall.

  • Publication number: 20070296125
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an inflatable cuff is provided. The method includes the acts of stretching a tube, creating a positive pressure within the tube, changing the amount the tube is stretched, heating the tube, and increasing the positive pressure within the tube such that a portion of the tube in blown outward to form a cuff.

  • Publication number: 20070083094
Abstract: A sensor is provided that is appropriate for transcutaneous detection of tissue or blood constituents. An electrochemical sensor for tissue constituent detection may include sensing materials that may be dry stored without liquid calibrant. The sensor may also include a temperature sensor that detects variations in tissue temperature at the sensor site. The tissue constituent measurements may be corrected in light of temperature variations of the tissue.
