  • Patent number: 5225458
Abstract: A process for (co)polymerizing alpha-olefins in the gas phase in a fluidized bed or mechanically stirred bed reactor using a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst or a heat activated chromium oxide/refractory oxide catalyst wherein the (co)polymerization is carried out in the presence of 0.005 to 0.2 weight %, based on the weight of the (co)polymer bed, of an inert pulverulent inorganic substance (e.g. silica) having a mean particle diameter between 0.5 and 20 microns. The process is capable of being operated at temperatures closer to the softening point of the produced polyolefin than in the absence of the pulverulent solid.

  • Patent number: 4921920
Abstract: The present invention relates to a gas phase process for the (co-)polymerization of alpha-olefins in a fluidized bed, by means of a catalyst system of the Ziegler-Natta type consisting of a catalyst (a) comprising magnesium, halogen and transition metal atoms and a cocatalyst (b) consisting of an organometallic compound. The catalyst system is (i) prepared in a granular form, either fixed on a granular support or converted into a prepolymer, (ii) then subjected to a treatment by a polymerization inhibiting agent in the absence of alpha-olefins, and then (iii) brought into contact with alpha-olefins under (co-)polymerization conditions in the fluidized bed, in the presence of a cocatalyst (c) consisting of an organometallic compound, identical or different from the cocatalyst (b).

  • Patent number: 4748221
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the polymerization of alpha-olefins in the gas phase in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system consisting of a catalyst comprising atoms of halogen, magnesium and a transition metal, and cocatalysts based on an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups II or III of the Periodic Table of Elements, this catalyst system being previously converted into a prepolymer or a catalyst supported on a granular substance. This process is characterized in that the polymerization in the gas phase is carried out by contacting one or more alpha-olefins, on the one hand with the prepolymer or the supported catalyst system comprising an organometallic compound (a) which is only slightly volatile as cocatalyst, and on the other hand another cocatalyst consisting of an organometallic compound (b) which is relatively volatile, in such a way that the total quantity of cocatalyst employed is relatively small.

  • Patent number: 4579833
Abstract: New catalysts which can be used for the polymerization and copolymerization of ethylene, comprising a support consisting basically of magnesium chloride on which is deposited by precipitation a vanadium compound, obtained by bringing a vanadium compound in which the vanadium is at one of the two maximum valencies 4 and 5 in contact with a support consisting basically of magnesium chloride and optionally of aluminium chloride and comprising products with an Mg--C bond.

  • Patent number: 4564605
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing supported catalysts for the copolymerization of ethylene with higher alpha-olefins, characterized in that a compound of a transition metal of Groups IV, V and VI of the Periodic Table of Elements, used at its maximum valency, is precipitated on to a support of magnesium chloride and possibly aluminum chloride by a reduction reaction in two stages, employing reducing agents selected for the first stage from among alkylaluminum dihalides, and for the second stage from among organo-metallic compounds with a higher reducing power than that of the alkylaluminum dihalides. These catalysts are particularly well suited to the copolymerization in the gas phase of ethylene and higher alpha-olefins.

  • Patent number: 4487846
Abstract: The present invention relates to catalyst supports for the polymerization and co-polymerization of alpha-olefins, especially ethylene and propylene, consisting essentially of magnesium chloride, characterized in that these supports contain a chlorinated compound of aluminium in a quantity such that the atomic ratio of Al/Mg is comprised between 0.001 and 0.1 and that they occur in the form of spheroidal particles having a mean diameter by mass comprised between 10 and 100 microns and a narrow and controllable particle size distribution such that the ratio of the mean diameter by mass to the mean diameter by number of particles is less than or equal to 3, and also a process for the preparation of these supports.
