In order to sort pieces of luggage efficiently, at least a portion of the set of information on the identification element is detected automatically and recognized automatically. During an examination, it is automatically verified whether the recognized portion of the set of information matches at least one set of data stored in a database.

Abstract: A method and a system for detecting consignments or items which cannot be conveyed by a conveying system cost-effectively detect non-conveyable items for a materials handling system. A conveyor section and a light grid or curtain or comparable measuring assembly are configured and disposed in such a way that a consignment or item can be conveyed on the conveyor section through the light grid or curtain, so that a data structure characterizing the consignment or item can be generated by the light grid or curtain and fed into the detection system. The detection system is adapted to judge whether the consignment or item is conveyable or not based on the data structure.

In order to detect a plurality of features of a piece of luggage, the piece of luggage is detected by a visual detection device, by which an image of the piece of luggage is produced. The visual features of the piece of luggage can be extracted from the image of the piece of luggage, and a description of the piece of luggage can be generated from the extracted visual features of the piece of luggage.

A non-machine readable sorting criterion can be assigned at the processing station. The assignment is effected in that an image of the luggage enabling the assignment can be transmitted to the processing station. A method for sorting luggage pieces according to a sorting criterion includes a step of relaying an image of a luggage piece to the processing.
