    Abstract: Ultrafast laser amplifier systems based on titanium doped sapphire are useful tools in science and industry. Their wider usage is limited by the high system costs, which results mainly from the use of the solid state pump lasers in the green wavelength range. This invention replaces the titanium doped sapphire amplifier by a diode pumped alexandrite amplifier and so improves the overall system performance and at the same time reduces the cost of the laser system.
