    Abstract: A disk drive has multiple preamplifiers (preamps) connected to the system-on-a-chip (SOC) by a common transmission line with resistors between the preamps and the SOC. Each preamp includes a read resistor at the output of each read amplifier, and a write resistor at the input of each write driver. The resistors may be programmable resistors located in the preamps. The read resistors are at the source of the signal to the transmission line and the write resistors are at the termination of the signal from the transmission line. The read and write resistors provide impendence matching with the transmission line and the SOC when one of the preamps is selected as active, which enables the SOC to operate seamlessly with a common transmission line connected to all preamps.

    Abstract: A disk drive preamplifier (preamp) includes a write driver that has two pairs of programmable bypass current sources not connected to the write current source to compensate for the inherent magnetic asymmetry of the write head. One pair of the programmable bypass current sources provides a fixed bypass current in one direction. The other pair provides a fixed bypass current in the opposite direction. Prior to writing, only one of the pairs of bypass current sources is selected and programmed with the correct value of bypass current. When the write driver generates the positive and negative write current pulses during writing the selected bypass current sources provide a fixed offset to the amplitude of the write current pulses.

The arm electronics IC includes a preamplifier with single-ended input from the set of signal traces that include a common signal return lead for the plurality of read transducers (readers) in the slider. Two embodiments of the preamps are described that include a single-ended design and a pseudo-single-ended design. Each embodiment supplies the required bias to each read transducer using an operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) that drives a variable current source connected to the transducer. The positive input to the OTA is a DC voltage with the AC signal from the transducer imposed on it. The negative input is a DC reference voltage. Various embodiments of the signal trace configuration on the suspension are described including a single and double layer embodiments.

    Abstract: Disk drives with preamp rotational parameter control (RPC) using standard digital serial interface lines to the preamp are described. The standard serial interface lines are used to generate a special signal pattern that does not follow the serial communication protocol. The special signal pattern is used to implement RPC when doing so will not interference with other signals, preferably in the read/write recovery gap between the data and the servo field in a standard track format. A value of a selected preamp parameter can be incremented or decremented by one LSB during the read/write gap time in each servo sector as the disk rotates. Embodiments of the invention allow fly-height and write driver parameters to be varied inside of a single disk revolution. Embodiments are described that include two or four parameters in the set, which allows for multiple updates of each parameter per revolution of the disk.

    Abstract: The invention is a disk drive with a thermal fly-height actuator and a fly-height controller that compensates for exponential write pole protrusion during a write operation. The fly-height controller includes fly-height control logic that controls a single digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that outputs a voltage to drive the heater. Prior to writing, the heater is at the heater power value (HPV) required to maintain the read head at the desired fly-height (Read-HPV). At the initiation of writing the fly-height control logic inputs a new HPV to the DAC to reduce the heater power to begin the compensation. A new and successively reduced HPV is input to the DAC for each servo-identification (SID) mark, during which writing is prevented. When the DAC output voltage approaches the voltage corresponding to the desired write-head fly-height, the method is done.

    Abstract: A circuit of a dual control voltage-controlled ring oscillator is disclosed having significantly less power and area while still maintaining a large frequency range and tune accuracy. The dual control ring oscillator has at least two delay paths which can be added or interpolated according to an interpolation variable set by a coarse tune and a fine tune code. In addition, moreover, each of the delay paths have a number of variable delay elements which are varied in response to another input code. When the variable delay elements are capacitors, the capacitance will be varied in accordance with another coarse tune code. In the preferred embodiment, the input codes are digital and the frequency range obtained can be greater than two to one. First, the variable delay elements are adjusted to obtain coarse tuning of the dual control ring oscillator then the interpolation variable is more finely adjusted to obtain fine tuning of the ring oscillator.
