  • Patent number: 4354777
Abstract: A high pressure transfer device and method of continuously conveying hard particulate material using the high pressure transfer device ensure proper operation even under high pressure differential. The high pressure transfer device includes a pocketed rotor containing through-going pockets and a housing enclosing the rotor and having ports disposed around the exterior periphery of the housing. A structure, such as first and second jacket portions, is provided for applying a radially inwardly directed force to the housing exterior periphery roughly proportional to and opposite a force tending to deflect the housing radially outwardly so that significant deflection of the housing is prevented. The force application structure generally applies a force proportional to the pressure of high pressure liquid entering the transfer device. Such a force applicator structure may be a piston and cylinder arrangement, or bellows arrangement, with a pair of force transmitting rods interconnecting the jacket portions.

  • Patent number: 4338049
Abstract: A high pressure transfer device and a method of continuously conveying a liquid suspension of particulate material utilizing the transfer device are provided. The device includes a pocketed rotor rotatable in a housing, with a center screen mounted in each rotor. The screen is mounted within each pocket interior so that as liquid under pressure enters the pocket through its inlet the screen will move to enlarge the volume between the inlet and the screen. This is accomplished by forming each screen as two screen portions and mounting the screen portions for pivotal movement with respect to a center post extending in the pocket coextensive with the rotor axis of rotation. Stops are provided extending from the pocket walls to prevent the screen portions for pivoting into alignment with the pocket inlet or outlet, and each pocket preferably has a substantially circular cross-sectional internal configuration.

  • Patent number: 4276167
Abstract: A diffusion washer and/or thickener assembly is provided that is greatly simplified. A number of withdrawal screens and fluid introducing structures are provided supported by spider arms which comprise conduits for introduction of liquid into and withdrawal of liquid from an elongated upright hollow vessel in which the assembly is disposed. The conduit means, with attached screen structures, is reciprocated up and down by a single linear actuator located preferably above the vessel and within the cross-sectional area thereof so that the wall of the vessel need not be penetrated by the conduits. The screens and fluid introducing structures remain stationary with respect to each other during reciprocation. A number of wiper blades, which may be operated by a single linear actuator, are provided at the top of the vessel for moving upwardly flowing pulp into withdrawal conduits surrounding the vessel periphery.

  • Patent number: 4174997
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously hydrolizing finely comminuted cellulosic fiber material and separately extracting the acid hydrolysate therefrom. Cellulosic material is fed into an upright elongated reaction vessel near the upper or top portion thereof and heated to hydrolysis temperature. The heated fiber material then passes downward through the reaction vessel and is concurrently treated by exposure to a short liquid phase which comprises concurrent impregnation and simultaneous concurrent hydrolysis to partially hydrolize the fiber material. The material is then exposed counter-currently to a liquid phase comprising a counter-current wash with simultaneous hydrolysis of a wash liquid which has been introduced from the bottom or lower portion of the reaction vessel, the wash liquid having been preheated to full hydrolysis temperature.

  • Patent number: 4093506
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the continuous distribution and mixing of high concentration pulp with at least one treatment fluid such as chlorine or chlorine dioxide. An enclosed housing has a cylindrical portion, a closed conical wall portion extending inwardly from one end of the cylindrical portion, and a generally converging open conical portion extending outwardly from the other end of the cylindrical portion. High concentration pulp is introduced into the cylindrical portion of the housing, and a rapid circular movement is imparted thereto by rapidly rotating rotor transport blades, so that the pulp is essentially fluidized. Treatment fluid is added to the pulp through the cylindrical housing portion to generally form a layer over pulp rotating in the cylindrical housing portion.

  • Patent number: 4092212
Abstract: Impregnation of fiber material before digestion is accomplished utilizing a minimum amount of equipment. Liquid with entrained fiber material -- both fiber material sufficiently impregnated with liquid to be denser than the liquid and material insufficiently impregnated to be denser than the liquid -- is fed from a high-pressure transfer valve to an inlet at the top of a continuous digester. The digester has an outlet disposed vertically above the inlet, and liquid along with fiber material of lesser density than the liquid is withdrawn from the outlet. The withdrawn liquid and fiber material is recirculated back to the transfer valve through a conduit adapted to allow the passage of fiber material entrained in liquid therethrough. Each individual portion of fiber material is continuously circulated until it becomes sufficiently impregnated with liquid to descend into the digester and form a fiber column therein.

  • Patent number: 4056429
Abstract: In counter-current treatment of cellulosic fiber material it is known to have strainers for separation of liquid from the fiber material. In this invention strainers are omitted by introducing pretreated sinking fiber material through an inverted funnel into a liquid filled tank passing treatment liquid counter-currently to the fiber material and extract liquid from a liquid room above the surface of the fiber material and above the open lower end of said funnel. The tank may be operated at atmospheric or at higher pressures to suit the conditions.

  • Patent number: 4028171
Abstract: A method for continuous treatment of fiber material in a digestor or the like that allows substantial segregation of the digestor treatment zones so as to prevent upflow of liquid from a bottom zone to an upper zone. An area of reduced cross-sectional area is provided between each treatment zone which increases the velocity of flow of fiber material and entrained liquid in that area, and substantially prevents upward movement of liquid therepast.
