  • Patent number: 5966897
Abstract: A packaging machine under control of an electronic control system is set forth. The packaging machine includes a plurality of servo driven packaging stations that execute the processes required to fill and seal a carton. Each of the packaging stations is driven by one or more servomotors associated therewith. A plurality of servo amplifiers are connected to the servomotors to control the rotational movement of the servomotors thereby to effect control of the motion of the various components associated with each if the packaging stations. The packaging machine further includes at least two programmable devices connected for communication over a common bus. A programmable axis manager (PAM) is connected to control the plurality of servo amplifiers and, thus, the motion profiles of the servomotors and components of the respective processing station. A programmable logic controller (PLC) is connected to receive and transmit input/output signals associated with the plurality of packaging stations.

  • Patent number: 5941417
Abstract: A system to be utilized at a dairy in the distribution of a pumpable food product from a storage tank to a filling machine for dispensing into containers. The system includes a balance tank for storing the product on the filling machine. The balance tank is in flow communication with a storage tank via a product line, and also has a level probe for monitoring the amount of product in the tank. A product pump pumps the food product to a valve mechanism which is also disposed on the product line. A programmable logic controller receives a signal from the probe indicative of the level of the product in the balance tank, and generates a series of signals to the product pump and the valve mechanism to maintain a steady flow of product from the storage tank to the balance tank. In this manner, foaming of the product in the balance tank is eliminated or substantially reduced to acceptable levels.

  • Patent number: 5587640
Abstract: A servomotor control system is set forth that assists in overcoming the problem of servomotor shut down during a failure of the programmable control system and/or servo-amplifier. The presently disclosed servomotor control system includes a programmable control system having one or more output signals connected to control a servo-amplifier. The system further includes a servomotor that is connected for control by the servo-amplifier. A safety switch is connected for detection by the programmable control system, the programmable control system controlling the servo-amplifier to brake the servomotor upon detection of the actuation of the safety switch. A delayed braking apparatus is disposed between the servo-amplifier and the servomotor. The delayed braking mechanism is also connected to detect the actuation of the safety switch, and acts to brake the servomotor after a predetermined time period from the detection of such actuation has lapsed.
