    Abstract: Novel 1,3-dialkyloxy-2-propanol and alkoxylates thereof may be prepared in good yield by a convenient process comprising adding epichlorohydrin to a stoichiometric excess of alcohol, wherein the ratio of alcohol:epichlorohydrin is at least about 3:1, preferably in the presence of a Group 1A metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst. The result shows excellent selectivity of to the 1,3-substitution positions, and the alkyl chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may contain one or more heteroatoms. The alkoxylates may include repeating alkoxy units in the 2-position. The compositions are useful as surfactants, diluents, and the like.

    Abstract: Novel alkylene oxide-extended alkoxylates of a branched 1,3-dialkyl-oxy-2-propanol may be prepared by a convenient process comprising adding epichlorohydrin to a stoichiometric excess of a branched alcohol, wherein the molar ratio of branched alcohol:epichlorohydrin is at least about 3:1, preferably in the presence of a Group 1 A metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst, followed by alkoxylation in the presence of an ionic catalyst. The branched alkyl chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may contain one or more heteroatoms. The repeating alkoxy units from the alkylene oxide are in the 2-position. The compositions are useful as surfactants, diluents, and the like, and may be less expensive than other branched surfactants.

The first layer contains a coupled propylene polymer and the second layer contains an in-reactor blend of a linear low density polyethylene fraction and a substantially linear polyethylene fraction. Preferably, the first layer makes up about 50 weight percent or less of the overall coextruded film structure. The foam contains a coupled propylene polymer and has a density in of from 9.6 to 801 kg/m3 and has either a foamability factor of more than 1.8 to less than 2.8 and an open cell content less than 20 percent, or a foamability factor of at least 2.8 and less than 15 and an open cell content of less than 50 percent. The process includes heating a coupled propylene polymer having a melt flow rate from 0.2 to 20 g/10 min and a melt strength of at least 39 cN to a molten state to produce a molten polymer material and mixing said molten polymer material with a blowing agent under conditions to produce a foamed material having a density in the range of from 9.6 to 801 kg/m3.
