  • Patent number: 7040422
Abstract: A drill string member is formed by providing a former and a cylindrical member to be shaped in relationship with the former. Seals are provided between opposing ends of a thick wall cylinder and the cylindrical member, a pressure is applied in the annulus between the cylindrical member and the thick wall cylinder sufficient to deform the cylindrical member against the former. The drill string member thus formed has a constant wall thickness and a non-circular former provides a non-circular drill string member.

  • Patent number: 5862866
Abstract: A double walled insulated tubing string (46) adapted to be hung from a well head (58) has an inner tubing string (21) formed of plural inner tubes and a radially outer tubing string (22) formed of plural outer tubes, the strings being independent of one another apart from axially fixing the strings relative to one another at the top end of the tubing string, although axial fixation may also be provided at the lower end of the tubular strings if desired. An annular insulating gap (30) between the tubing strings (21, 22) is hermetically sealed at both opposing ends and may be evacuated. Inner and outer tubing strings may be run into a well using conventional oil well drilling technology and there is no mechanical connection between the inner and outer tubing strings (21, 22), especially at connections of the respective inner and outer lengths of tube.

  • Patent number: 5783368
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of forming a number of electric conductors at a very short distance from the end of depressions such as V-grooves on a substrate. In one configuration example, a film of PTFE or of a similar material is laminated over the entire surface of the substrate. Holes are etched in the film. The holes are metallized. Conductive paths are formed, which are electrically connected to the metallized holes. The film in the area of the grooves is removed by etching. In another configuration example, the grooves are temporarily filled with a photoresist and the conductive paths and contact surfaces are formed in accordance with a photolithographic method.

  • Patent number: 5352566
Abstract: Manufacturing of optoelectronic components in which an optical waveguide is made of an optically nonlinear (NLO) polymer, above and below of which is provided a buffer layer which carries at least one stripe electrode. The at least one stripe electrode is used as a mask to form the NLO polymer waveguide.

  • Patent number: 5246733
Abstract: In a method of producing a device having at least one optical waveguide on a substrate, two transparent layers are formed one on top of the other on the substrate. The material of the two layers is selected so that the melting point of the material of the second layer is lower than that of the material of the first layer, but has a higher refractive index than the first layer. After formation of the structure, a heating process is performed in which the material of the second layer melts and, due to surface tension, its surface, when seen in cross section, takes on the shape at least approximating the arc of a circle. With this cross-sectional shape, coupling of light waves into and out of an optical fiber is possible at one edge of the substrate after the end faces of the optical waveguide have been ground or polished.

  • Patent number: 5012863
Abstract: A blade (8) for a pipe milling tool having a body (1) and a longitudinal axis (100) has a plurality of slots (12) extending both in a generally radial direction and in an intended direction of rotation of the milling tool about the longitudinal axis. Located in each slot (12) is at least one cutting element (13), the slot and the cutting element both having a greater depth in the blade in the intended direction of rotation than height in the longitudinal axis direction. The provision of such dimensions for the slot and cutting element affords the blade with improved life. The cutting elements may each have a negative axial rake angle (A) and the cutting elements are preferably brazed in each of the slots. In a preferred embodiment the slots and the cutting elements are both similarly decreasingly tapered from a forward (leading) face (221) to a rearward face (218) with respect to the intended direction of rotation of the tool by an angle in the range 1.degree. to 20.degree..

  • Patent number: 4899223
Abstract: An electrode array for an electrooptical facsimile recorder and a method of controlling this electrode array are disclosed. A plurality of spot electrodes are inserted between two main electrodes deposited on a lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) substrate. In this manner, three partial lines of electrically controllable light gates are formed which provide a line-at-a-time output of the information to be reproduced. The individual light gates are controlled by driver ICs with push-pull output stages. To control the individual partial lines, different voltages must be applied to the main and spot electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4842082
Abstract: An apparatus for use in energy exploration is disclosed which is used where a radially expanding device is required, for example in a stabilizer, retriever or an underreamer. The apparatus comprises a support tubular member for connection to a drilling string, the member supporting a movable member which is axially movable along the member. A further member which may either be fixedly secured or also axially movable along the member is axially spaced from the movable member. The movable member and, optionally, the further member have tapered outer surfaces which cooperate with a taper on a radially movable member. The arrangement is such that movement of the movable member in the axial direction is such that the cooperating tapers cause the radially movable member to expand or contact in the radial direction. Various means for securing and performing radial movement are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4766445
Abstract: An electrode array is disclosed for a print head of an electrooptical facsimile recording device for recording spots line by line. The recording spots are exposed on a recording medium through light gates (35). These light gates (35) are arranged in rows and are defined by high field strength edge portions (switching areas) of spot electrodes (22, 22') and main electrodes (23, 24, 25, 26). Each spot electrode (22, 22') is associated with n light gates (35, 19), each spot-electrode row (27, 28) being associated with n main electrodes, so that n(N-n) light gates are formed by N electrodes. The electrode array in designed so that each spot-electrode row (27, 28) is between at least wo elongated main electrodes; each spot electrode 22 has n switching areas (20, 21) which are located adjacent n respective main electrodes.
