  • Publication number: 20070182597
Abstract: The invention relates to a modulation code system and methods of encoding and decoding a signal to be used for data transmission or data storage. Such systems comprise an encoder (100) for transforming an original signal s into an encoded signal c satisfying predefined second constraints before said signal being transmitted via a channel (300). Such modulation code systems further comprise a decoder (200) for decoding the encoded signal c, after restoration, back into the original signal s. It is the object of the invention to improve such known systems and methods in such a way that they require less hardware. This object is achieved according to the invention in that the encoder (100) comprises a modulation encoder (110) transforming the original signal s into an intermediate signal t satisfying predefined first constraints and a transformer encoder (120) for transforming the intermediate signal t into the encoded signal c.

  • Publication number: 20070115771
Abstract: For (re)writable and read-only optical disc systems the data clock is recovered by a phase locked loop (PLL), where the error signal is generated by comparing the actual zero-crossing with the zero-crossing of the generated clock signal. Given an optical system with a laser wavelength ?laser and a numerical aperture NA, the cut-off wavelength of the Modulation Transfer Function is given by ?0=?laser/(2·NA). With decreasing bit length the amplitude of the minimum wavelength will decrease and is zero for wavelengths below ?0. Consequently, the phase error signals generated by zero-crossing of these signals are disturbed by noise. The idea of the invention is to use the zero-crossings with sufficient performance only in deriving phase information for the clock recovery.

  • Publication number: 20070058763
Abstract: A device (200) with an adaptive equalizer (210) includes an adaption scheme performed in the synchronous domain. The equalizer coefficient update scheme is based on a correlation of an error sequence (delta k) derived from the equalized sequence transposed to the synchronous domain (Ek) and a synchronous and delayed version (Jk) of a vector of the equalizer tap values (Vn). The result of the correlation is further passed through an arrangement of integrators (226) and a temporal interpolator (228). The vector of equalizer tap values is converted into the synchronous domain by means of a bank of sampling rate converters (230) of which the overall implementation (300) can be simplified.

  • Publication number: 20070030780
Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method of estimating the tangential tilt of an optical data carrier (302) intended to store a primary data signal (301), said method comprising a cross-correlating step for correlating a first data signal (m) derived from a readout data signal (z) with a second data signal (w) derived from a data decision signal (DDS), said readout data signal (z) being derived from said primary data signal (301).

  • Publication number: 20060181964
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of determining write parameters for recording information on a record carrier, said information being in the form of a multidimensional channel data stream to be recorded as a channel band of at least two symbol rows one-dimensionally evolving along a first direction and aligned with each other along a second direction.

  • Publication number: 20060015798
Abstract: The present invention relates to a Viterbi bit detection method for detecting the bit values of bits of a channel data stream stored on a record carrier along an N-dimensional channel tube, N being at least two, of at least two bit rows one-dimensionally evolving along a first direction and being aligned with each other along at least a second of N-1 other directions, said first direction together with said N-1 other directions constituting an N-dimensional lattice of bit positions, comprising application of a row-based one-dimensional Viterbi bit detection method independent for each of the bit rows of said channel tube.

  • Publication number: 20060002688
Abstract: The present invention relates to a bit detection method for detecting the bit values of bits of a channel data stream stored on a record carrier, wherein the channel data stream resides on an N-dimensional lattice of bits and comprises a plurality of contiguous bit units, each bit unit comprising at least one bit, wherein bit detection for the channel data stream is performed by an iterative procedure, each iteration being carried out on the basis of said bit units, wherein the bit values of the bits of a bit unit are detected by said iterative procedure based on the received HF signal values of the bits of said bit unit. The proposed method comprises an initialisation step, an updating step and an iteration such the method the bits are detected in an iterative but non-recursive way which allow for a high level of parallel processing in the implementation.
