  • Patent number: 4684405
Abstract: A sintered tungsten carbide material and method for manufacturing same in which the method includes the steps of combining metal particles composed of from 75 to 95 percent by weight of a composition containing at least 70 percent by weight of tungsten carbide and from 5 to 25 percent by weight of a binder metal composition, the binder metal composition consisting essentially of from 5 to 15 percent by weight of chromium and from 85 to 95 percent by weight of nickel; pressing the metal particles into a pressed body; sintering the pressed body in a sintering chamber for a period ranging from 20 to 200 minutes, at a temperature ranging from 1400.degree. to 1500.degree. C., and in a protective atmosphere which is one of a vacuum, a noble gas, a mixture of noble gases, and hydrogen gas to form a sintered body; and treating the sintered body for a period ranging from 20 to 200 minutes, at a temperature ranging from 1300.degree. to 1400.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4284687
Abstract: A compound body comprising a metallic basic body, an inner layer or layers of carbides and/or nitrides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Si, or B, and an outer layer or layers of a mixture of oxides and nitrides and/or oxynitrides of Cr, Al, Ca, Mg, Th, Sc, Y, La, Ti, Hf, V, Nb, or Ta. The compound body can be used as a part subject to wear, and for machining metallic materials.

  • Patent number: 4276096
Abstract: Method for producing a hard metal body having increased wear resistance, the body containing at least one of the binder metals iron, cobalt and nickel and at least one carbide of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, the body being produced by way of sintering and having a nitrogen containing surface, comprises subjecting a hard metal body containing the binder metal and carbide to a pressure between 2 bar and 5000 bar in a sintering autoclave at a high temperature and in a nitrogen containing atmosphere, after final sintering, to enrich the hard metal body with nitrogen and to form the nitrogen containing surface.

  • Patent number: 3999953
Abstract: A molded article is provided which is comprised of (1) a core of hard metal body of at least one binder metal of iron, cobalt and nickel and at least one carbide of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, and (2) a surface layer of a hard metal on the core. The same carbides that are in the core are in the surface layer. The carbide concentration in the surface layer is greater than in the core and the carbides of the surface layer originate from the core.A method is provided for producing such articles and comprises subjecting the core of hard metal body to a carbon monoxide-containing gas for a period of from 0.5 to 24 hours, at a temperature of from 1,000.degree. C to 1,600.degree. C and a pressure from 1 Torr to 1,000 Torr to form the surface layer of hard metal on the core.

  • Patent number: 3999954
Abstract: A wear-resistant hard metal body is provided including a core of a hard metal body and a surface coating of a hard material on the core. The core of hard metal body includes at least one of the binder metals iron, cobalt and nickel and at least one of the carbides of the elements titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten. The surface coating of hard material contains at least one carbide, nitride, boride and/or oxide. The binder metal contained in the core of hard metal body is also contained in the surface coating of the hard material and originates from the core of hard metal body.A method is provided for producing such wear-resistant hard metal bodies by subjecting a hard metal body comprising a core of hard metal body and a hard surface coating on the core to a pressure of between about 10.sup.-.sup.5 Torr and about 10 bar and a temperature between about 900.degree. and about 1600.degree.
