  • Patent number: 9249235
Abstract: Methods of extracting chitin and chitosan from fungal biomass using a solution of one or more ammonia compounds, amines, and/or alkaline silicate compounds. The solution dissolves and extracts amino acids, fatty acids and other carbohydrates from the fungal cells leaving chitin and/or chitosan, and the extractant may be recovered from the liquid by simple phase changes such as heating or cooling, dissociation into volatile components, distillation and/or solidification and separation of immiscible extractants. Further lipid removal may be achieved with one or more organic solvents, which may also be recovered by distillation.

  • Patent number: 8481295
Abstract: A method of processing stillage from fermentation derived alcohol is disclosed, including dry-grind ethanol production from corn, by fermentation with filamentous fungi. This produces high-value fungal biomass that can be recovered by screening, is easily dewatered and used as an animal feed, human food or as a source of nutraceuticals. The methodology uses an airlift reactor to enhance the morphology of the fungi for easy harvesting and separation of water for recycling and reuse and to recover added enzymes and mineral acid with the water. The process also separates oil from the stillage. The fungal processing removes organic substances from the water that are otherwise inhibitory to the reuse prospects for the water, i.e. suspended and dissolved organic matter, including glycerol, lactic and acetic acids. The process also separates oil from the stillage by enmeshing the oil in the fungal biomass and can produce more oil through cultivation of oleaginous fungi.

  • Publication number: 20020129554
Abstract: A device for sealing a door or window casing by means of an insect-repellent gauze screen. The device comprises a rectangular insect-repellent gauze screen that is secured with one end to a roller rod, around which it can be wound and unwound, and with the other end to a pulling beam, which is provided with two handles. The roller rod is accommodated in a first frame section to be placed vertically. The pulling beam can be slid against a second frame section to be placed opposite the first frame section. The device further comprises a third and a fourth frame section, which possess a U-shaped guide section, in which an edge of the gauze screen is guided. The device comprises securing means so as to enable the fitting of the frame sections before the casing. The securing means are mounted on an inner wall of the casing, in particular on the transverse side of decorative parts present around the easing.

  • Patent number: 5851584
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for applying a protective layer to vessels or utensils used in the food industry, such as the milk and meat industries, wherein the vessels or utensils are contacted with an aqueous (natural) soap solution and then rinsed with water. The soap solution used is 2-10 ml, preferable 2-5 ml liquid soap per 100 l water, e.g. mains water. Furthermore, the relevant method is advantageously carried out at a temperature of the range of 10.degree.-40 .degree. C. By using a soap layer as protective layer, the use of disinfectants has become superfluous in the food industry so that the attendant problem of discharging or rendering harmless harmful disinfectants foreign to nature has also been solved.

  • Patent number: 4498884
Abstract: When affixing the display screen to the cone and upon evacuating the display tube, the display screen and the cone are subjected to temperature treatments in which stresses occur in the display screen which might cause fracture of the display tube. In order to reduce the probability of fracture, during the temperature treatment measures are taken which infuence the temperature distribution over the display screen and the cone in such manner that the occurrence of stresses in the display screen is counteracted.

  • Patent number: 4470903
Abstract: Flotation apparatus for flocculated solid material has a flotation tank alongside a passage for upward flow of liquid carrying the solid material. A wall of the passage on the side towards the tank has a top portion curved over to its free edge to provide a submerged weir over which the liquid passes from the passage into the tank. To prevent turbulence in the liquid on passing over the weir and to prevent a preferential flow path in the flotation tank, the tank itself has, on its side towards the upward flow passage, a side wall which is generally spaced from the side wall of the passage but joins the latter wall away from the said free edge. The tank side wall slopes downwardly away from the passage from a point located inwardly of the tank with respect to the free edge.
