Patent number: 5250874Abstract: A plug in lamp with spring side contacts having bulb, holder, lugs, and a seal is disclosed. The lugs have outwardly arced spring sections that are compressed during lamp insertion, thereby forming a latching mechanism to hold the lugs and lamp in place, while simultaneously providing electric power through the lugs. Sealing structures are disclosed that protect the welds, and others electrical features from environmental degradation.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1991Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: Rolland B. Hall, John A. Bergin

Patent number: 5172026Abstract: A plug in lamp having a base to support a light source is described. The base includes electrical connectors on the light source side of a hermetic seal. The electrical connection is then made between the base, and a socket formed for the base so the connecting elements are sealed on the lamp side of the interface between the base and socket.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1990Date of Patent: December 15, 1992Inventors: Rolland B. Hall, John A. Bergin

Patent number: 5121304Abstract: A vehicle lamp having a lamp capsule held in a holder with electric leads protruding into a base where a pressure arm holds the leads against connection lugs, in addition to the leads being welded to the connection lugs. The lugs then extend through the base to be exposed for connection in a connector receptacle end.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1990Date of Patent: June 9, 1992Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: Rolland B. Hall, John A. Bergin

Patent number: 5018992Abstract: A wedge lamp and clip having exterior means for making electric connections to a lamp lead, and having pinning means for securely locating the lamp and clip in a base are described. By bringing the lamp lead out and folding it back over the lamp clip, the clip may directly and securely mate to the envelope extension, and multiple secure electrical and mechanical contacts may be made between the clip and the lamp lead. By making the clip conductive, the electric connection need not be made directly to the lamp lead, but may be made indirectly through the conductive clip. Mechanical stress between the lamp envelope and any support may also be mediated by the clip.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1988Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: John A. Bergin, Roger A. Racette

Patent number: 4837479Abstract: An electric, incandescent lamp including an electrically insulating (e.g., plastic) base which is securedly positioned on the lamp's sealed end portion without the need for adhesives or the like. The base functions to securedly retain the lamp's lead-in wires (a total of four in a dual filament lamp) in a preestablished alignment externally of the lamp's sealed end (from which the wires project) to thereby assure positive electrical connection thereto when the lamp and base are inserted within a corresponding electrical socket. The invention is ideally suited for use in a tail light assembly for an automobile.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1984Date of Patent: June 6, 1989Assignee: GTE Products CompanyInventors: Daniel D. Devir, Richard J. Dolan, John A. Bergin

Patent number: 4707767Abstract: A motor vehicle headlight module capable of being used as part of a headlighting assembly containing several (e.g., at least four) such modules therein. Each assembly may in turn provide one-half of the total forward lighting system for a motor vehicle. Each module includes a high temperature plastic parabolic reflector, a low wattage (e.g., 18 watts) tungsten halogen capsule, and a planar glass lens for providing a seal for the module. Each module is adapted for being readily aligned within a holder member which forms part of such an assembly and may be retained therein by relatively simple means (e.g., a wireform). The invention further includes a connector means (e.g., female socket) designed for being slidably positioned on the rear neck portion of the invention's reflector to effect contact with the invention's capsule.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1986Date of Patent: November 17, 1987Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: John A. Bergin, George J. English

Patent number: 4660128Abstract: A motor vehicle lighting assembly capable of functioning as one-half of the total forward lighting system for a motor vehicle. The assembly includes a common holder member designed for being aligned within the motor vehicle and a plurality (e.g., four or five) of replaceable, sealed lighting modules to provide the necessary illumination. Each module includes a plastic reflector, a low wattage tungsten halogen capsule, and a glass or plastic lens for providing a seal for the module. Each module is readily aligned within a respective compartment of the common holder member and is retained by at least one wireform.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1986Date of Patent: April 21, 1987Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: John A. Bergin, George J. English

Patent number: 4631651Abstract: A replaceable automobile headlight lamp unit and headlight utilizing same wherein the unit's electric lamp (e.g., tungsten halogen) is securedly retained within a clamp member including an insulative base and a pair of spaced-apart retaining clips for grasping the lamp's press-sealed end portion. The base includes a curvilinear surface which mates with a surface having a similar configuration located within an insulative holder which also forms part of the invention. A pair of spaced contacts located within the holder pass through apertures within the base and are connected (e.g., welded) to the retention clips. A ball-joint arrangement is thus provided to enable facile alignment of the electric lamp relative to the holder prior to final securement between the holder and base components.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1985Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: John A. Bergin, Frank Cangiano

Patent number: 4569005Abstract: A lamp unit (10) for being removably positioned within the rear opening (11) of an automobile headlight reflector (13). The unit (10) includes a plastic holder (19), an electric (e.g., tungsten halogen) lamp (30) having a filament structure (42) contained within the envelope (33) thereof, a clamp member (46) secured to the lamp's press-sealed end portion (47), and an insert member (48) located within a cavity (21) of the holder (19). The clamp member (46) includes a pair of curved flange portions (56,58) which engage and are secured (e.g., welded) to the outer, curved surface (59) of the insert member (48), thus facilitating alignment and positioning of the lamp (30) relative to the holder (19).Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1985Date of Patent: February 4, 1986Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: John A.
