  • Publication number: 20220001973
Abstract: A fastening system to couple a first aircraft structure and a second aircraft structure is disclosed. The fastening system includes a fastener, a nutplate having a body defining an opening to receive the fastener, a flange extending from the body to engage an outer surface of the first structure, and a first sleeve protruding from the flange in a direction away from the body, the first sleeve to couple to a first bore formed in the first structure and prevents rotation of the nutplate relative to the first structure.

  • Patent number: 10072694
Abstract: A fastener insertion system, for use with an assembly stack-up, includes a fastener and an end effector. The end effector includes a drill bit for drilling a hole through the stack-up, a probe for determining a stack-up parameter, and a fastener feed head for installing the fastener into the hole and applying rotational torque to complete fastener installation. The fastener insertion system also includes a processing device and an angle sensor communicatively coupled to the processing device and to the end effector. The processing device is programmed to measure, with the rotation angle sensor, the angular displacement required to complete fastener installation and to transmit a signal representative of the measured angular displacement from the angle sensor to the processing device. The processing device is also programmed to compare the measurement of angular displacement required to complete fastener installation to a range of angular displacement indicative of correct fastener installation.

  • Patent number: 9512501
Abstract: A method of making a hypereutectoid, head-hardened steel rail is provided that includes a step of head hardening a steel rail having a composition containing 0.86-1.00 wt % carbon, 0.40-0.75 wt % manganese, 0.40-1.00 wt % silicon, 0.05-0.15 wt % vanadium, 0.015-0.030 wt % titanium, and sufficient nitrogen to react with the titanium to form titanium nitride. Head hardening is conducted at a cooling rate that, if plotted on a graph with xy-coordinates with the x-axis representing cooling time in seconds, and the y-axis representing temperature in Celsius of the surface of the head of the steel rail, is maintained in a region between an upper cooling rate boundary plot defined by an upper line connecting xy-coordinates (0 s, 775° C.), (20 s, 670° C.), and (110 s, 550° C.) and a lower cooling rate boundary plot defined by a lower line connecting xy-coordinates (0 s, 750° C.), (20 s, 610° C.), and (110 s, 500° C.).

  • Patent number: 8310124
Abstract: A compact, rugged, variable reluctance, variable speed, electric motor capable of producing high torque at high electrical energy conversion efficiencies is provided. The present invention provides for a multi-stage motor design having a number of discreet rotor and stator elements on a common shaft. This configuration provided the simplest of magnetic structures and produces a powerful magnetic flux modeling design technique that is used to further optimize the motor design and subsequent control logic. Thermal mapping of the magnetic mass provides for advanced cooling techniques that are used to insure long in-service life in the most extreme of industrial applications. The electric motor inherently provides low vibration thereby greatly reducing noise; low turn to turn voltage potential thereby eliminating costly phase to phase shorting potential; efficient motor operation through the reduction in switching and copper losses in both the machine and its control.

  • Patent number: 8146230
Abstract: A fastener may include a shaft and a head. The shaft may have first and second opposing ends and a first surface having a first diameter. The head may be attached to the first opposing end of the shaft. The head may have a second surface comprising a second diameter which is larger than the first diameter. The head may have a third surface extending between the second surface and the first surface. The third surface may be defined by a relief slot extending from the second surface to at least one of near and to the first surface. The relief slot may be for providing a relief path to reduce pressure during installation, using a viscous compound, of the fastener to a member.
