  • Patent number: 6245289
Abstract: A refiner disk or disk segment cast from a stainless steel alloy having a composition of 0.2 percent to 0.6 percent carbon, 0.5 to 1.5 percent manganese, 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent silicon, a maximum of 0.05 percent sulfur, a maximum of 0.05 percent phosphorus, 14 percent to 18 percent chromium, 2 percent to 5 percent nickel, 2 percent to 4 percent copper, a maximum of 1 percent molybdenum, 1.5 percent to 5.0 percent niobium, a maximum of 1.5 percent vanadium, and a maximum of 0.5 percent total of at least one element selected from either rare earth metals and/or magnesium, the balance being iron. The niobium and vanadium form discrete carbides at high temperatures during the melting process. The rare earth metals and/or magnesium enhances the toughness of the disk by helping to shape the carbides and control them as discrete particles. Upon cooling, the carbides are preferably distributed evenly throughout the structure.

  • Patent number: 5868330
Abstract: A refiner plate has bars integrally formed with the refiner plate base member which have discrete regions of selected physical properties. A material possessing the physical property is deposited in a reservoir in the bar, such as a groove. The reservoir may be positioned in the top of the bar and may be of various shapes. Alternatively, the reservoir with material is positioned on the bar leading or trailing edge. Alternatively, an abrasive surface extends over the entire upper surface of the bar including the leading and trailing edges. The bar may be formed of a white iron alloy which is heat-treated to form a soft matrix with embedded carbide grains. By protecting regions of desired smoothness with a wear-resistant protective coating flow is preserved in selected areas.

  • Patent number: 5824265
Abstract: A refiner disk or disk segment is cast from a stainless steel alloy having a composition of 0.2 percent to 0.4 percent carbon, 0.5 to 1.5 percent manganese, 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent silicon, a maximum of 0.05 percent sulfur, a maximum of 0.05 percent phosphorus, 14 percent to 18 percent chromium, 2 percent to 5 percent nickel, 2 percent to 5 percent copper, a maximum of 1 percent molybdenum, and 1.5 percent to 2.5 percent niobium, the balance being iron. The Niobium forms discrete carbides at high temperatures during the melting process. Upon cooling, the carbides are distributed evenly throughout the structure. This resultant alloy provides toughness and corrosion resistance like a lower carbon alloy plus increased wear resistance due to the carbide formation. The alloy utilizes chromium to impart corrosion resistance, the process of tying up carbon as discrete, non-chromium carbides increases the amount of chromium present to provide corrosion resistance.

  • Patent number: 5467931
Abstract: A refiner disc employing sharply tapered refiner bars wherein the upper portion of at least one side tapers inward at thirty to sixty degrees from the vertical. The tapered refiner bars tend to wear sharp. A further embodiment employs refiner disc bars which have a substantially narrower bar forming the upper portion of a standard, substantially rectangular bar.

  • Patent number: 5147552
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for tangential filtration with filter cleaning in which a fluid to be filtered forms a liquid loop and circulates tangentially to one surface of a membrane at a pressure Ph in which a filtrate flows from the other surface of the membrane through a pipe, provided with a flow meter and a first valve, to a tank at atmospheric pressure Pa, filtration taking place by virtue of a positive transmembranal pressure Ph - Pa. In the filtration phase, the hydrodynamic pressure Ph is adjusted by means of a second regulable valve. During the filter cleaning phase the first valve is closed and at the same time the second valve is slightly opened, the second valve is suddenly opened, the first valve is opened and the second valve is progressively closed. The method and apparatus in particularly suited to the filtration of corrosive liquids.

  • Patent number: 4052719
Abstract: According to the invention, a television receiver system comprises selector equipment for selecting information in the form of coded characters, received separately from any picture signals, from a single information channel or a small number of information channels and routing the selected information to a storage device, and a reading device operable, when actuated, to read the information from the storage device repeatedly and feed it, via a character generator, for display by an intensity modulated raster.

  • Patent number: 3996583
Abstract: In any television transmission system there are periods during which the wide-band picture signals are absent. The invention provides a signal generator system for the transmission of digital information representing a series of pages of alphanumeric or graphical symbols piecewise during these periods. At least one peripheral generating device is provided for supplying digitized data to a main storage device (conveniently of the magnetic disc type) and transfer means is operable to read out portions of the data from the main storage device and store them temporarily in a second storage device. Discharge means is operable to discharge portions of the data from the second storage device at intervals to provide output signals for insertion in a television signal during periods as aforesaid.

  • Patent number: 3961137
Abstract: Apparatus for processing groups of digital data for transmission comprises a run-in signal generator for providing at the output of the apparatus an output in which the groups of data are each preceded by a run-in signal, said apparatus being so constituted that the output is in the form of digital signals of the complemented type, and a start code generator operable to provide a start code with at least one break of complementation and arranged to insert a start code between each group and its preceding run-in signal. The apparatus is especially suitable for the transmission of data intermittently, e.g. during periods of a television signal unoccupied by wide-band picture signals. Because of the complementation break, the start code cannot arise from a data combination. Good reliability of reception is achieved on channels susceptible to interference.
